Machinist

Job Responsibilities

* Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
· Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines or grinders.
· Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
· Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
· Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
· Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
· Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
· Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.
· Manage inventory of tools to maintain efficiency of jobs going through the shop.
· Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
· Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools.
· Consult with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information.
· Establish work procedures for fabricating new structural products, using a variety of metalworking machines.
· Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics.
· Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
· Able to hold tolerances at or below .005". complete other task when asked by supervisors or management

Required Skills / Knowledge

* Ability to use and read precision tooling, ability to work both in team setting as well as with minimum supervision, strong knowledge and experience with manual machines.

* Must be able to operate various powered hand tools.

* Able to read engineering & manufacturing drawings.

* Able to check own work with inspection tools, gauges, micrometers, and indicators.

* Experience working with horizontal lathes, vertical milling machines and surface grinders.

* Capable of machining down to precise tolerances below .0005 inches.

* Able to follow written and verbal instructions.

* Ability to perform routine machine preventative maintenance.

* General understanding of gas turbines, gearboxes and centrifugal compressors, or similar rotating equipment

Experience

* Must have minimum of 5 years' experience working with close tolerances on manual lathes, grinders and mills and performing basic routine maintenance on machines & tools.

Education Requirements

* Must have High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

* Ability to stand for long periods of time.

* Ability to lift 30lbs
