The Metal Sorter is responsible for identifying, sorting, and processing various types of scrap metals to support efficient and environmentally responsible recycling operations. Working in both indoor and outdoor environments, this position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety. The Metal Sorter plays an essential role in turning used metal products and scrap materials into reusable raw resources.
EssentialFunctions & Responsibilities
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all company safety policies and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Operate all tools and machinery in accordance with safety and operational standards.
- Metal Identification & Sorting:
- Identify and test metals using handheld analyzers, magnets, or other appropriate tools.
- Sort and separate ferrous and non‑ferrous metals, including high‑temperature alloys, titanium, red and white metals, and other specific alloys.
- Place sorted materials into designated containers (barrels, bins, pallets, or gaylords).
- Machine Operation:
- Operate processing equipment such as shears, cutters, saws, grinders, puckers, balers, or shot blasters.
- Operate forklifts, skid steers, power lifts, or front‑end loaders to move and load materials.
- Use shredders and balers to compress recyclable metals into bundles or bales for shipping.
- Participate in load pulling, preparation, and truck loading activities.
- Material Handling & Yard Maintenance:
- Safely handle, move, and transport metal materials throughout the yard and/or warehouse.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area by sweeping, raking, and clearing debris.
- Assist with other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and perform physically demanding work (standing, bending, and repetitive motion).
- Comfortable working in varied weather conditions and noisy environments.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify metal types accurately.
- Team‑oriented with the ability to work independently when needed.
- Basic computer skills.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Experience: - Previous experience in recycling, warehouse, or industrial settings preferred, but not required.
- Forklift experience operating material‑handling equipment preferred.
- Willingness to learn new processes, tools, and safety procedures.
- Environment:
Work is performed in a recycling yard or industrial facility with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures. - Hazards:
Work involves operating heavy machinery and handling large metal materials; adherence to safety protocols is mandatory. - Physical Demands:
Frequent lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods are required.
