Summary / Position

Purpose:

The Print and Label Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining manufacturing processes for print and label production. This role ensures efficiency, quality, and consistency across all printing operations, including flexographic, digital, and offset processes. The Engineer collaborates with sales, estimating, production teams, maintenance, and quality departments to improve throughput, reduce waste, assist in the quoting process, and implement continuous improvement initiatives aligned with company goals.

Essential Duties, Functions and/or Responsibilities:

  • Design, analyze, and refine printing and label manufacturing processes to maximize efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide technical expertise to assist in the quoting process for new projects, working with production, sales, and estimating to ensure we are set up to manufacture the project in the best and most efficient method and using the proper materials.
  • Work closely with sales to identify the customer’s needs and develop a solution.
  • Provide technical expertise to troubleshoot printing issues related to color registration, adhesion, substrate compatibility, and die-cut accuracy.
  • Evaluate and recommend upgrades or new equipment to improve production capabilities; lead installations and process validations.
  • Implement lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Kaizen methodologies to reduce waste, enhance productivity, and maintain operational excellence.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality inspection standards for print and label production.
  • Partner with suppliers to evaluate inks, adhesives, films, label materials, papers, and other raw materials for performance, print quality, and cost.
  • Identify and deploy automation solutions, print management systems, and workflow improvements.
  • Assist with training operators and technicians on process best practices, equipment maintenance, and quality standards.
  • Collect and interpret production data to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure manufacturing processes adhere to safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO, GMP, or customer-specific standards).
  • Indirectly responsible for product quality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in print, label, or packaging manufacturing (flexographic, digital, or offset printing experience strongly preferred).
  • Proven experience improving production efficiency, yield, and print quality through process engineering methods.
  • Strong knowledge of printing technologies, color management, substrates, and finishing processes.
  • Proficiency in CAD or process design software and data analysis tools (Excel, Minitab, Power BI preferred).
  • Understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies (certification preferred).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
