The Role
Trócaire is seeking to appoint a new Board member with experience in mobilising the public in Ireland. The term of office is three years with a possibility of one term renewal.
Required Skills And Experience- Significant senior leadership experience in developing marketing/media/PR/public engagement strategies and activities at national level in Ireland.
- Advocacy and mobilising the public in Ireland around global justice issues.
- Strong communication, strategic and analytical skills.
- Experience of influencing and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
- Comfortable working and contributing remotely and in hybrid meeting settings.
- A strong commitment to social justice and human rights, including gender equality.
- An understanding of the ethos of Trócaire as an agency inspired by Catholic Social Teaching.
- Time to commit fully to the role.
- Champion the mission, vision, values and ethos of Trócaire.
- Provide long-term strategic direction, approving organisational strategy and monitoring performance.
- Review the financial performance of Trócaire and approve the annual budgets.
- Ensure Trócaire complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure Trócaire upholds the highest standards of governance.
- Ensure adequate provision is made for safeguarding the assets of Trócaire.
- Ensure Trócaire has appropriate policies and systems in place.
- Ensure that effective safeguarding systems are in place.
- Ensure compliance to all statutory obligations of a company director and registered charity in Ireland.
The Board consists of up to fifteen people of diverse backgrounds. The Chair is a member of the Irish Bishops’ Conference. The Board meets approximately five times a year, plus the AGM. Meetings are a combination of two face‑to‑face meetings in or near Maynooth, Co Kildare, and three online meetings. Meetings last approximately four hours. In addition to the scheduled board meetings there is one board strategy day.

The Board has five committees and a subsidiary Board for Trócaire Northern Ireland:
- Ireland (Funding & Public Engagement) Committee
- Audit & Risk Committee (ARC)
- International Programmes Advisory Committee (IPAC)
- Organisation & Human Resources Committee (OHR)
- Nominations Committee
The incoming Board member would be expected to sit on the Ireland Committee which meets four times a year (twice in person and twice online). Each meeting lasts approximately four hours.
