Position OverviewThe Director of Natural Gas Commercial Strategy and Business Development is a senior leader responsible for shaping and executing the company’s natural gas market strategy through rigorous market analysis, price forecasting, and integrated commercial planning. This role serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership by clearly communicating complex market views to senior stakeholders and delivering actionable insights on supply, demand, inventory dynamics, and infrastructure for established markets and new market opportunities.
This Director owns the development of long-term natural gas market models and produces regular research, scenario analyses, and price forecasts that inform strategic decision-making, physical sales strategies, and financial hedging activities. Working closely with operations, midstream, and strategic planning teams, this leader ensures market intelligence is tightly aligned with corporate objectives and risk‑adjusted margin optimization throughout the commodity cycle.
In addition to analytical leadership, the role also fosters key industry relationships to facilitate new business development activities, ensuring the company remains competitive and well‑positioned for growth. By enhancing analytical processes and leveraging technology, this Director strengthens the marketing team’s capabilities and the impact of market intelligence across the organization.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing team
- Direct and own the analysis of market fundamentals (supply, demand, inventory, infrastructure) and market forces across local and NYMEX benchmarks
- Create and maintain long‑term natural gas market models and produce regular reports, research updates, and scenario analyses to inform executive leadership decisions.
- Develop and present defendable near‑ and longer‑term price forecasts (NYMEX and basis differentials) to senior management and key stakeholders.
- Assist with the development of integrated strategies across physical sales and financial hedging to optimize risk‑adjusted margins throughout the commodity cycle.
- Foster and maintain critical industry relationships to facilitate new business opportunities and enhance market intelligence.
- Collaborate with operations, midstream, and strategic planning teams to ensure alignment of market analysis with corporate goals.
- Identify and implement process improvements and technology solutions to enhance market analysis and reporting capabilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- 15+ years of experience in natural gas market analysis, marketing, or business development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Deep expertise in North American natural gas fundamentals, including supply/demand modeling, inventory analysis, and NYMEX/basis forecasting.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and communication skills, with experience presenting complex market views to senior management.
- Proven ability to build and maintain industry relationships and identify new business opportunities.
- Proficiency in relevant market analysis tools, ETRM systems, and advanced Excel skills.
