JOB DESCRIPTION

The Executive Director of Facilities Maintenance is a leadership position that distinguishes itself through strategic oversight of the full facilities lifecycle-from planning and construction to maintenance and energy management. This role plays a critical part in supporting the strategic mission of the University by ensuring the effective stewardship of physical assets and infrastructure. Reports to the Chief Operating Officer (Vice President of Administration).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This position is distinguished by its university-wide scope, authority over long-range capital planning and utilities infrastructure, and influence on system-wide policies and strategic development. It requires deep subject matter expertise, advanced leadership capabilities, and the ability to coordinate complex initiatives that align physical infrastructure with institutional priorities.

Essential Duties Summary

* Oversees facilities planning, construction, maintenance, utilities management, and sustainability initiatives.

* Leads long-range capital planning and campus development in alignment with institutional goals.

* Directs complex technical operations, including utilities generation and distribution (e.g., steam and chilled water), ensuring operational excellence and sustainability.

* Oversees the management and maintenance of more than 3.1 million square feet of campus facilities across 150 acres

* Management of large-scale facilities initiatives with accountability for multimillion-dollar capital and operational budgets with a focus on resource optimization and fiscal accountability

* Engage internal and external stakeholders to ensure that facilities initiatives align with the academic and institutional priorities.

* Provides leadership to a department of facilities professionals ensuring efficient coordination across operational units.

* Champion's innovation, energy conservation, and sustainability in higher education facilities operations.

* Drives strategic campus development while maintaining operational integrity, regulatory compliance, and long-term value for the university.

* Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Range $-$ Education

Required:

Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or related field.

Preferred:

Master's preferred.

Required Licensing/Certification

Required:

Recognition as the subject matter expert in multiple disciplines such as engineering, architecture, and project management.

Preferred:

Professional licensure (PE, RA, or PMP).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

* Institutional, state, and federal policies, regulations, codes, and best practices related to facilities management, construction, and safety compliance

* Facilities operations, planning, engineering, and capital project delivery, with deep subject matter expertise across multiple technical and administrative disciplines

* Advanced supervisory and organizational leadership principles, including team development, performance management, and change leadership

* Enterprise systems such as Banner, integrated work order systems, and other facilities or project management platforms

* Microsoft Office Suite and similar applications used for strategic planning, data analysis, reporting, and communication

Skill in:

* Strategic planning and execution of complex, multi-year initiatives aligned with institutional priorities

* Capital and operational budget development, oversight, and financial forecasting at a multimillion-dollar scale

* Advanced problem-solving and critical decision-making in high-stakes, cross-functional environments

* Oversight of physical plant operations and familiarity with facilities systems and equipment functionality

* Executive-level team leadership, staff development, and performance management

* Cross-functional coordination and collaboration with internal departments and external partners

* End-to-end project leadership from concept through completion, including scope, budget, and compliance

* Clear, concise, and persuasive verbal and written communication tailored to diverse stakeholders

* Managing multiple priorities and competing deadlines through effective time management and strategic delegation

* Understanding and overseeing the use and maintenance of complex facilities-related equipment and infrastructure

* Providing strong, principled leadership with a focus on performance, accountability, and continuous improvement

* Effectively coordinating and directing cross-functional teams to achieve operational and strategic objectives

* Leading complex projects from planning to completion, ensuring alignment with institutional goals, budgets, and timelines

* Demonstrating excellence in both verbal and written communication across diverse audiences, including senior leadership, staff, and external partners

Ability to:

* Synthesize complex technical and financial information into detailed, actionable reports

* Operate with a high degree of autonomy while ensuring transparency and accountability
