Position Description

Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One. Precinct One covers 363 square miles and serves approximately 1.17 million residents with a diverse population (33% African American, 38% Latino, 21% Anglo, 6% Asian, 2% other). The precinct includes downtown Houston landmarks such as the Texas Medical Center, Toyota Center, and Minute Maid Park, and hosts institutions like Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, University of Houston, and University of St.

Thomas. Precinct One manages more than 21 parks, 10 community centers, numerous trails, three maintenance service centers, and several area offices.

What You Will Do

Ensure routine maintenance of various Precinct One buildings, offices, and facilities is completed efficiently.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide day‑to‑day custodial care at assigned locations according to established schedules.
  • Wash windows, walls, tables, desks, and benches; polish metalwork; clean chalkboards; dust and clean furniture and polish woodwork; sweep, scrub, mop, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms; wash sinks, mirrors, toilets; empty trash receptacles; refill soap, towels, and other dispensers.
  • Move, set up, and arrange furniture and equipment as requested; ensure windows, doors, and gates are locked and report incidents of vandalism and theft.
  • Communicate with administrators and faculty about special custodial needs and facility security; maintain routine records; request supplies and cleaning materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Experience: One (1) year of relevant custodial experience.
  • Licensure: Valid driver’s license (Texas upon hire).
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
    • Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
    • Ability to lift and move over 40 pounds.
    • Knowledge of different cleaning products and tools.
    • Time‑management and multitasking abilities.
    • Physical strength and stamina.
    • Organization skills.
    • Proficient knowledge of cleaning equipment and agents.
Additional Information
  • Position Type: Full‑time | Regular.
  • Work Environment and Physical Demands:
    • Indoor and outdoor environment; exposure to dust, fumes, and odors.
    • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, airborne particles, and chemicals.
    • Physically active role requiring ability to exert up to 50 lbs of force occasionally.
  • Seniority level: Entry level.
