Overview
The Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library seeks an Associate Law Librarian to deliver senior-level services that advance the library’s mission of providing equitable, open, and effective access to legal information for all patrons. This position provides high-level legal reference support, leads initiatives across core service areas, and helps strengthen the patron experience. The Associate Law Librarian serves as a lead contributor to cross-functional committee work and guides planning, assessment, and continuous improvement efforts to keep resources current and accessible, expand public legal literacy through outreach and education, ensure clear and mission-aligned communications, and apply user-centered and technology-informed approaches to enhance service delivery.
Responsibilitiesand Duties
- Support all library services, including the Copy Center, as needed: assist patrons with copying, scanning, faxing, and other office-related tasks.
- Follow cash handling and reporting procedures as necessary.
- Enforce Law Library rules and draft/submit violation reports as necessary.
- Contribute to the organization of the Law Library by following opening/closing procedures, reshelving and updating materials, and maintaining a neat appearance.
- Develop a professional development plan that includes at least 20 hours per year of professional development coursework or other learning opportunities.
- Assist patrons with Harris County Public Library materials at the Law Library, including registering new cards, handling check in/out and holds, and processing materials.
- Perform other duties and job-related tasks as assigned.

- Bachelor’s Degree (in any field) from an accredited college or university plus five (5) years of experience in a public or private law library setting.
- OR Master of Library Science / Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university plus three (3) years of experience in a public or private law library setting.

- Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong people skills in interactions with patrons and staff.
- Project management experience or abilities desired.
- Knowledge of Texas legal research materials and self-help resources.
- Knowledge of HTML, web-scripting, content management systems, and IT systems preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of EOS.Web Express library system preferred.
- Bilingual abilities, particularly English/Spanish, desired.

Location and Schedule- Located in downtown Houston; full-time position. Typically Monday through Friday, with some additional hours as necessary.
- Work hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential shifts within those hours.
- Work environment is a public Law Library with standard office equipment.
- Standing for prolonged periods; ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally; repetitive motion (keyboard use); problem-solving, decision-making, organization, and the ability to manage workplace stressors.
- Base compensation determined by qualifications and market comparisons. Total compensation includes paid leave, health benefits, and retirement plans.
- Eligible for compensatory time off for hours over 40 per week in accordance with Harris County policies.
Employment may be contingent on drug screen and meeting other standards. Positions may close before the advertised date at the discretion of the Hiring Department.
