Senior/Associate Counsel - Mass Tort/Class Action/Complex Litigation Position with Leading Plaintiff Firm in Houston
A mid-sized, highly reputable, plaintiff firm in Houston is in need of a 5-15 year attorney who can lead their mass tort/class action/complex litigation team.
This includes defective product cases such as medical devices, automotive, etc., as well as class actions against entities causing broad injuries (like overbilling customers by providers of municipal services, etc).
This role will be responsible for leading a team of attorneys, paralegals, and staff to manage a diverse mix of cases. The candidate also will have exposure to personal injury, property damage, and commercial litigation matters.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in mass torts, class, actions, and/or complex litigation, including case management, client interaction, trial experience, and negotiation, as well as proficiency in handling legal documentation and court procedures. The ideal candidate also would have experience in personal injury, property damage, and/or commercial litigation.
Responsibilities
- Case Management: Manage a diverse mix of mass tort, class action, and complex litigation cases from initial intake through resolution, including settlement or trial.
- Client Interaction: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring clear communication, addressing concerns, and providing updates on case status.
- Legal Research and Writing: Conduct legal research and draft, among other things, pleadings, motions, discovery, and demand letters.
- Discovery: Manage all aspects of discovery including experts and depositions.
- Court Appearances: Represent clients in court, including hearings and trials.
- Negotiations: Lead negotiations with opposing counsel, insurance companies, and other parties to reach favorable settlements for clients.
- Strategic Advice: Provide clients with sound legal advice and guidance based on their individual cases and the law.
- Collaboration: Work closely with senior attorneys, paralegals, and other team members to ensure case progression and preparation for trial or settlement.
- Document Review and Preparation: Review medical records, accident reports, medical reports, and other documents critical to case development.
- Maintain Case Files: Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of case files and records in compliance with firm procedures.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior attorneys and legal staff.
- Client Development: Assist the Firm in acquiring cases by developing clients through quality work, business activities, referrals, etc.
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Licensing: Active license to practice law in the State of Texas and licensed to practice in both state and federal courts.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing personal injury law.
- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of mass tort, class action, complex litigation, and personal injury law, including trial procedures and relevant case law.
- Technology Proficiency: Comfortable using legal case management software and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with other legal tools is a plus.
- Client-Focused: Proven ability to build and maintain strong client relationships while providing exceptional legal representation.
- Team Player: Ability to collaborate with colleagues, including senior attorneys and support staff, in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Mentorship: Willingness to mentor and guide junior attorneys or paralegals.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Proficient in drafting briefs, pleadings, motions, discovery, and demand letters.
- Significant deposition experience as lead lawyer including fact and expert depositions.
- Experienced in negotiations and settlement discussions, including mediation and arbitration, with strong record of resolving contested matters.
- Ability to work independently and manage a caseload effectively.
- Civil jury trial experience including 1st chair and 2nd chair.
- Experience: 8-15 years of experience practicing mass tort, class action, complex litigation, and/or personal injury law.
- Language: Fluency or proficiency in Spanish is a plus but not required.
- Competency: Experience with personal injury, property damage, and commercial litigation is a plus qualification for this position.
