Job Type: Full-time
Description:
Primary Goal: Communicate accurately and faithfully between American Sign Language and English. Provide student support in American Sign Language, SEE, or Orally and in English. Provide linguistic expansion, redirection, and instructional support for students.
- Be available to attend communication facilitator assignments at the discretion of the Interpreter Coordinator/Manager. Hours of availability to be determined based on business needs.
- Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information as well as other professionally established ethical tenets.
- Willingness to meet the communication needs of Deaf consumers including demonstrating proficiency in ASL, Transliteration, SEE, and other interpreting modes as appropriate.
- Commit to professional development and maintain good standing with the applicable certification board.
- Interpret messages simultaneously and/or consecutively into American Sign Language and English, respectively; orally and by using signs, maintaining message content, context, and style as much as possible.
- Compile terminology and information to be used in interpretations, including technical terms such as those for legal or medical material.
- Identify and resolve conflicts related to the meanings of words, concepts, practices, or behaviors.
- Refer to reference materials, such as dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, and computerized terminology banks, as needed to ensure interpretation accuracy.
- Educate students, parents, staff, and teachers about the roles and functions of educational interpreters.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Valid certification from BEI and/or RID.
- Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrate native fluency in American Sign Language and English. Ability to read, write, and interpret from English into ASL. Ability to understand receptively ASL, and interpret into spoken English.
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint and superior knowledge of Excel
- Experience with Google Docs and Apple/Mac Operating System preferred
Communication Facilitators who will attend assigned appointments via their own means by driving their personal vehicle must show proof of an active, valid driver's license and car insurance. MVR Reports may be conducted to ensure good standing of driving ability. Specific car insurance limits may be required. Communication Facilitators who will attend assigned appointments via means of other transportation must specify their means of traveling to assigned appointments.
