Network Security Engineer - Remote - Houston, TX

Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Network Security Engineer / Systems Administrator with a minimum of 8 years managing Linux, Windows, and cloud-based environments. This role covers server administration, network security, database management, containerization, and performance optimization across on-premises and cloud systems. The ideal candidate will have strong Docker container management skills and expertise in securing automated deployment and migration pipelines, ensuring infrastructure is both secure and efficient from development to production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain Linux servers for optimal performance and uptime.
  • Monitor system resources (CPU, memory, disk usage) and optimize as needed.
  • Automate recurring tasks using cron jobs and shell scripting.
  • Implement and maintain security best practices, including SSH restrictions, server hardening, kernel updates, and account management.
  • Configure logging and monitoring using Graylog, ELK Stack, Splunk, or similar.
  • Implement auditing with auditd or equivalent tools.

Database Administration

  • Manage MySQL and/or Postgre

    SQL databases, including permissions and encryption.
  • Optimize database performance through indexing, query tuning, and process monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain robust backup and recovery strategies.

Windows Server Administration

  • Administer Windows Servers and core server roles.
  • Manage Active Directory, group policies, and user accounts.
  • Configure Windows Firewall and automate security patching.
  • Integrate event logging with monitoring tools.

Cloud Administration (AWS or Azure – AWS Preferred)

  • Provision, configure, and maintain cloud resources.
  • Manage EC2 instances, RDS/Aurora databases, and networking components.
  • Configure IAM policies, security groups, and access controls.
  • Administer S3 buckets with encryption and lifecycle policies.
  • Implement cloud backup, disaster recovery, and cost optimization strategies.

Containerization & Deployment Security

  • Deploy and manage Docker-based applications.
  • Ensure container security through image scanning, access control, and vulnerability patching.
  • Integrate security checks into CI/CD pipelines to prevent vulnerabilities in production.

Networking & Security

  • Maintain network configurations, firewalls, and secure connectivity.
  • Ensure compliance with internal and regulatory security standards.
  • Collaborate with security teams on penetration testing, audits, and incident response.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years administering Linux and Windows environments.
  • Strong shell scripting and automation skills.
  • Proven experience in server hardening and security compliance.
  • Strong MySQL/Postgre

    SQL security, optimization, and backup expertise.
  • Proficiency with logging/monitoring tools (Graylog, ELK Stack, Splunk, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Linux auditing tools (auditd or equivalent).
  • Experience with Docker container management and security best practices.
  • Experience implementing security in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Performance tuning and capacity planning expertise for servers and databases.

Preferred Skills

  • AWS or Azure certifications (Sys Ops Administrator, Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator Associate).
  • Power Shell scripting experience.
  • Familiarity with VMware, Hyper-V, or other virtualization platforms.
  • Knowledge of SOC2, ISO
    27001, HIPAA, PCI-DSS compliance.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Relevant industry certifications preferred.
