Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Scribe to join our innovative team with the mission of Fighting Blindness For The World To See. The position is responsible for accurate documentation, summarization of the ocular examination and recommendations, ICD
10 coding and CPT in patient charts, while maintaining patient flow and communication regarding appointment status. Candidates must be able to travel to various clinics to meet the needs of patients and providers, and support clinic hours of Monday through Friday between 6:30am and 6:30pm. Schedules are provided weekly and are based on the provider s clinic, patient and surgery schedules.

Clinic staff may have weekend hours if available.

Responsibilities
  • Correctly summarizes and documents what the physician verbalizes during an examination, including proper charting of the examination, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment and recommendations for treatment with justification, and closing patient charts in a timely manner.
  • Accurate ICD
    10 and CPT coding in patient charts.
  • Observe the patient and the physician and assist during the exam as needed, including providing patient support, medications and/or instruments, and following directions in a medical emergency.
  • Maintain awareness of patient verbal and non-verbal cues and provide written instructions and patient education materials as needed.
  • Ensure patient understands all instructions and accurately document amendments to patient charts according to practice protocols.
  • Maintain patient flow, including confirming insurance authorization prior to treatment.
  • Provide support to the clinic by assisting Ophthalmic Technician duties as needed.
  • Alert the physician to patient-related forms that need completion.
  • Guide patients to the front desk after exams and communicate follow-up appointments for scheduling before patient departure.
  • Evaluate the examination room for adequate supplies and safe patient entry/exit.
  • Notify physician of changes to the daily schedule, especially emergencies.
  • Facilitate communication between the physician and other staff to minimize clinic flow disruptions.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Skills/Competencies
  • Knowledge of required components of examination for appropriate CPT coding to ensure all elements are accurately completed.
  • Understanding of Medicare and other common insurance requirements for quality reporting to help the practice comply with payer requirements.
  • Training and understanding of HIPAA requirements and patient confidentiality.
  • Strong, professional interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Team-oriented, able to multi-task, highly organized with attention to detail.
  • Computer literacy and ability to spell accurately while charting.
  • Fluency in English; bilingual preferred.
  • Ability to educate patients regarding instillation of eye drops and other treatment plan instructions; understanding of ophthalmic terminology.
Education Requirements
  • High school diploma required; bachelor s degree preferred.
Experience Requirements
  • At least 6 months of experience in a medical office, preferably ophthalmology.
  • Scribe certification (certified ophthalmic assistant) preferred.
Physical Abilities
  • Must be able to walk and stand for the full shift.
  • Must be able to move frequently between standing and sitting during clinic sessions.
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting.
  • Must be able to hear softly spoken words.
  • Lifting required up to 30 pounds.
