Position SummaryThe Clinical Laboratory Technologist works under general supervision and is responsible for complex laboratory procedures and handling all types of specimens submitted to the department for processing tasks assigned.
Responsibilities- Performs clinical laboratory tests proficiently under general supervision and exercises independent judgment in the specialty assigned.
- Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting and maintains accurate records.
- Maintains records that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Determines acceptability of specimens, prepares clinical specimens, and identifies specimen‑related problems according to SOP guidelines.
- Analyzes specimens using approved testing procedures.
- Reviews, releases test results and follows department procedure in reporting STATS or critical results to interpreting physicians per SOP.
- Performs and documents Quality Control on reagents, equipment and assays; recognizes and acts on QC failures through consultation or follow‑up with Supervisor or Lead technologist.
- Documents all corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
- Prepares stock solutions, reagents and cocktails per SOP; tests and evaluates them, documenting results.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical or biological sciences with at least one year of laboratory experience or training.
- 1+ years equivalent experience in high complexity testing preferred.
- Certification:
Nationally, ASCP certification for the assigned specialty, if available. - State licenses: FL – Clinical Laboratory Technologist; CA – Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Clinical Cytogeneticist or Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist; TN – Medical Laboratory Professional.
