Overview
The CORE Hematology Laboratory supports MD Anderson's mission by providing high-quality, timely hematologic testing that informs patient diagnosis, treatment decisions, and ongoing care. The laboratory partners with clinical teams to deliver accurate and reliable results that support complex oncology care across the institution.
RoleAs a Medical Laboratory Scientist in CORE Hematology, you will perform a full range of laboratory testing while adhering to established policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and safety standards. This role is responsible for proper specimen data acquisition, accurate analysis and evaluation of patient results, and troubleshooting and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation. You will maintain competency in laboratory computer systems, manage inventory controls to ensure effective use of reagents and supplies, and ensure patient information and results are stored for timely access and continuity of care.
This position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations by organizing and prioritizing work to meet productivity demands, working independently, and supporting peers and supervisors as needed. You will actively participate in training and mentoring students, employees, and fellows; support process improvement initiatives; and assist with the validation and implementation of new methodologies, tests, and laboratory systems in collaboration with laboratory leadership and technical support teams.

Shifts and EducationThere are 3 different shifts available with hours starting at 5:00 a.m., 6:30 a.m., and 7:00 a.m. Please discuss your preferred starting time in the interview. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field or have completed a NAACLS MLS program.
Job CompetenciesTechnical skills
- Remains knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols.
- Properly acquires specimen data into the computer system(s).
- Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Maintains competency in computer functions in assigned areas.
- Follows section's inventory control system to assure effective use of supplies and reagents.
- Analyzes and evaluates patient results correctly and appropriately.
- Complies with safety guidelines and procedures and adheres to regulatory mandates.
- Stores patient information and results to allow easy future access as required.
Enhances productivity and laboratory functions by demonstrating dependability.
- Adjusts, prioritizes, and organizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands of the section.
- Assists peers and supervisors with tasks after completion of assigned work.
- Adheres to attendance policy, begins work as scheduled.
- Works independently, utilizes resources available to maximize efficiency.
Assists in the development of laboratory personnel and tests, to enhance laboratory functions.
- Actively participates in training students, employees and fellows.
- Participates in process improvement projects.
- Validates and evaluates new methodologies and tests with the help of Laboratory Supervisor and technical support.
- Validates database for new software or new tests implemented in the laboratory.
- Coaches and mentors students and employees.
Other duties as assigned
Required- Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
- Bachelor's Degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology OR
- Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology program
- 2 years of clinical laboratory experience with an Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology
- 1 year of clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor's Degree in a related science field
- No experience required with completion of a NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology program
- ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologists Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification OR
- CHS - Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
- CHT - Certified Histocompatibility Technologist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
- MDT - Molecular Diagnostics Tech, American Medical
