Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the direct supervision of registered pharmacist the Pharmacy Technician has the primary responsibility in the areas of medication receiving, preparing, compounding, dispensing and delivery. The position also requires the compounding of intravenous solutions, maintenance of floor stock, entering patient charges into the computer, and maintaining the required disposition records for all pharmaceuticals. Effective communication skills with all individuals both inter and intra‑departmental, to ensure effective completion of all tasks within the department.

  • Generates labels, fills medications according to physician’s orders and delivers them to the Nursing Units as per departmental schedule.
  • Maintains floor stock for approved medications and pharmaceutical supplies on all patient care units.
  • Routinely inspects the floor stocked medications and ensures they are both in date and secured (to prevent pilferage and/or tampering).
  • Answers the telephone by the third ring and provides assistance to the caller to satisfactorily answer their question.
  • Accurately refills medication carts and exchanges the cubicle as per schedule.
  • Attains competency in the operation and maintenance of pharmacy equipment i.e. unit‑dose packaging equipment;
    Accudose;
    Meditech; etc.
  • Assists in checking in merchandise from the vendors, applying stickers to the products, rotate stock on shelf and signing off on invoices. Also returns unused/returned inventory back to stock.
  • Performs other departmental functions assigned i.e. making pharmacy rounds, refrigerator temperatures, crash cart fills, documentation of compounding and pre‑packing pharmaceuticals products, etc.
  • Maintains proficiency in unit‑dose packaging function, over wrapping; and applying barcode to the unit‑of‑use dosages and maintains accurate records of all activities.
  • Monitors the accurate documentation of Controlled Substances administered in these areas. Also ensures this category of pharmaceuticals are always secured with double‑locks. Proof of use records for narcotics are filed daily.
  • Performs unit and crash cart inspections in a timely manner (every month) and accurately documents these activities.
  • Ensures that pharmacy charges are entered into the pharmacy computer system on a daily basis. Accudose charge rejections are reconciled on a daily basis.
  • Ensures all medications dispensed and/or floor stocked have a valid and readable bar‑code.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the department.
What qualifications you will need
  • State Registration Pharmacy Technician
  • (CPhT) Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • High School Graduate / GED
  • IV Therapy, or (CSPT) Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician
