Position Summary

Under the direction of the CODIS Administrator, the Assistant CODIS Administrator is responsible for the input and retrieval of data entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) utilized by the Forensic Biology Division of Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC). CODIS is a national FBI system used to search DNA profiles obtained from crime scene evidence against DNA profiles from other crime scenes and from convicted offenders and arrestees.

CODIS can generate investigative leads in cases when a match is obtained. The Assistant CODIS Administrator is responsible for operating the DNA profile database for exchange of sensitive and confidential criminal‑related genetic information among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and for ensuring accurate and timely results are released to the requesting investigator.

Specific Duties
  • Operate the CODIS database in accordance with state and/or federal law and the operation procedures of the State DNA Index System (SDIS) and National DNA Index System (NDIS).
  • Ensure appropriate entry of information within the database.
  • Retrieve data and make appropriate notifications in a timely manner.
  • Review and make best efforts to disposition matches in accordance with CODIS Handbook, NDIS Operational Procedures, and CODIS SOP.
  • Upload profiles to SDIS and NDIS, schedule uploads from local laboratories, and review CODIS generated reports.
  • Back up CODIS data, including performance of periodic restores, to ensure backups are working properly.
  • Compile and prepare monthly reporting of Investigations Aided and Hit Statistics to SDIS and/or NDIS.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff members for CODIS operations and information.
  • Serve as the gatekeeper for DNA records entered into CODIS.
  • Notify the CODIS Administrator within two business days of any information which may impact HFSC’s continued use of the CODIS database.
  • Assist in the completion of the Annual Audit certification.
  • Attend the annual CODIS Conference.
  • Utilize tools for tracking calls, emails, and other client communication channels.
  • Communicate with prosecutors, defense attorneys, investigators, and other CODIS laboratories.
  • Compose, edit, and issue CODIS notification letters.
Required Experience Minimum Academic Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, forensic sciences, or a closely related science field from an accredited college/university (transcripts required).
  • Courses or training in statistics and population genetics as they apply to forensic DNA analysis.
Minimum Experience Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a qualified Forensic DNA Analyst.
  • Experience with CODIS Admin tasks preferred.
  • Documented mixture interpretation training.
  • Successful completion of current FBI-sponsored Quality Assurance Standards Auditor training preferred.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Ability to think critically, troubleshoot effectively, and make timely and sound decisions.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to become proficient in job‑appropriate software.
