Position Summary

UTHealth Houston seeks a Safety Manager to address environmental protection issues. The employee provides expertise in managing safety programs for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston’s Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department. Responsibilities include supervising and coordinating hazardous waste and environmental management efforts, ensuring compliance with institutional, local, state, and federal regulations, and implementing control measures for a safe environment.

Candidates who are certified Hazardous Materials Managers (CHMM) by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) are highly preferred.

Position Key Accountabilities
  • Develops, administers, and interprets programs and policies for environmental protection, risk management & insurance
  • Identifies potential safety and health hazards and discrepancies with UTHealth safety policy, regulatory agency standards, and national guidelines; develops solutions
  • Develops strategies, policies, and procedures and implements control measures to ensure a safe and healthy work environment in unique teaching, research, and clinical settings
  • Prepares reports for supervisors, principal investigators, and managers; recommends control and compliance measures
  • Advises employees, students, and faculty on safe work practices and potential hazards
  • Prepares various types of reports, including submissions to safety committees or advisory groups and activity reports
  • Communicates with federal, state, and local safety, health, and environmental agencies concerning compliance issues and emerging standards
  • Evaluates facility and construction plans to identify safety concerns and presents recommendations to ensure a safe institutional environment
  • Participates in or leads accident/incident investigations
  • Participates in the development and delivery of safety training for employees, students, and faculty
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and conferences to keep abreast of emerging safety, health, and environmental issues
  • Manages Human Resources activities of the department in regard to recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning
  • This job classification is designated as "essential" at the UTHealth Science Center at Houston; personnel in designated "essential" positions are expected to report to their work site during their work schedules even during restricted access or closure due to adverse conditions
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Specific Position Expectations and Accountabilities
  • Supervises Safety Specialists within the Environmental Protection Program who help safely collect, manage, and dispose of hazardous wastes (biological, chemical, radiological, universal wastes) generated during routine teaching, research, and clinical activities on campus
  • Coordinates efforts to meet the regulatory requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) related to hazardous waste and environmental regulations
