Position Description

P4

FIP (Precinct 4 Forward Internship Program), is an 9-week paid summer internship for students with a passion for serving others. You will be surrounded by team members who bring "heart, hustle, and higher standards" to work each day. These leaders advance opportunity and justice as they deliver services to and advocate for the residents of Harris County. The team you will be joining is innovative, dynamic, and forward-looking.

We’ve designed our program to expose students to career opportunities with Harris County and apply what they have learned in the classroom to hands‑on projects. P4

FIP provides students the chance to bridge the gap between academic understanding and practical professional experience. Students from all schools, and students who identify with a group that is historically underrepresented, including but not limited to Black, Hispanic, Native American, students with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply. Interns will create a community to help support their personal and professional development throughout the summer as they launch their career.

Interns will work with a mentor, form relationships with other interns, and engage our Senior Leadership Team.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in interdivisional projects.
  • Assist in maintaining relationships with elected officials, legislative staff, regional agencies, and community partners.
  • Track bills, policy proposals, regulatory changes, and administrative actions relevant to County priorities.
  • Contribute to special projects such as community engagement initiatives, policy reviews, and intergovernmental program development.
  • Monitor relevant news, political developments, and policy trends and provide timely updates to supervisors.
  • Help prepare materials for meetings with policymakers, including talking points, fact sheets, and presentations.
  • Create, maintain, and enter information into databases.
  • Support planning and execution of county workshops, town halls, or advocacy days.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Education and Additional Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate college, community college, or university pursuing a degree in Business, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Strong desire to work in government management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Share Point.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of public administration, political science, business, or related fields, with an interest in government operations and policy processes.
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to summarize and communicate key takeaways to diverse, nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to manage time, stay organized, and prioritize competing imperatives and seek guidance when needed.
  • Effective skills using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) with the ability to create professional emails, letters of support, and documents.
