Primary Purpose

The District Police Officer is responsible for handling law enforcement and police related matters at District facilities as outlined in the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedures, District’s Board Policy, Management Guidelines, Departmental Rules and Regulations, and as directed by the Chief of Police. The district police officer works cooperatively with school administration, students, staff, other district police officers, and officers from all law enforcement agencies to maintain positive campus security and a safe and secure environment.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Texas Peace Officer License issued by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE)
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Ability to pass required physical, psychological, and drug tests
  • Must be bonded as required by Texas Education Code (37.081)
Special Knowledge / Skills
  • General knowledge of criminal investigation, police report writing, and criminal laws
  • Ability to exercise good judgment under potentially dangerous conditions
  • Training and ability to subdue offenders, including use of firearms and handcuffs
  • Ability to work well with youths and adults
  • All officers are required to work during man‑made or natural disasters impacting the school district at the direction of the Chief of Police
  • Ability to pass required physical, psychological, and drug tests
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Patrol the district and provide police services to individual facilities, students, and staff
  • Operate a district vehicle and patrol school property or an assigned area to deter criminal offenses
  • Investigate criminal offenses within the district’s jurisdiction or against the district
  • Collect evidence
  • Enforce regulations for and on district school buses
  • Perform physically strenuous activities to identify, detain, and apprehend offenders
  • Respond to burglar and fire alarms as dispatched and investigate causes
  • Investigate suspicious persons in and around schools
  • Report misuse of buildings and property belonging to the district
  • Enforce all general and criminal laws of Texas within the district’s jurisdiction
  • Assist traffic control on streets, at athletic events, and school openings/closings
  • Provide crisis response to schools and facilities
  • Perform security inspections of buildings
  • Conduct intrusion system transmission tests
  • Report road and weather conditions that may affect transportation schedules
  • Maintain vehicle service to ensure proper functioning vehicle
  • Perform central alarm monitoring and dispatching
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies on campus when requested
  • Investigate violations of district rules and regulations when requested by administration
  • Participate in administrative hearings regarding violations
  • Provide police services at district‑sponsored events
  • Promptly refer non‑district related criminal incidents to the proper agency
  • Prepare written reports on incidents and problems for successful criminal prosecutions
  • Appear in court as a witness whenever summoned
  • Maintain a positive image of the district
  • Provide courtesy services as requested
  • Assist in enforcing applicable items from the student handbook
  • Establish positive working relationships among students, staff, and the community
  • Be available to work overtime and call‑out on emergency situations
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police
Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. May require strenuous walking, standing, and climbing; driving in all areas, operating a motor vehicle; working outdoors in varying climate conditions; and handling violent or armed confrontations. Staff may be on call 24 hours a day.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent knowledge of standard law enforcement procedures and the regulations relating to school district law enforcement
  • Ability to exercise good judgment under potentially dangerous conditions
  • Ability to maintain records and write offense reports in English
  • Effective oral and written communication in English
  • Ability to perform exterior checks without a vehicle
  • Mobility and dexterity to respond quickly
  • Strength to detain intruders who physically resist
  • Maintain valid Texas driver’s license, good driving record, TCLEOSE license, and firearm proficiency
