A Day In The Life

The Director, Business Tax is a senior leader within The Friedkin Group's Tax organization, responsible for setting and executing the business tax strategy across the company's large operating businesses and pass-through entities. This role owns end-to-end tax planning, compliance, and advisory for S corporations and operating partnerships with complex, multi-state footprints, where complexity is driven by scale, transactions, and strategic activity rather than volume alone.

Serving as the primary business tax authority and advisor to senior business leaders and shareholders, you will influence decisions across operations, Finance, and the Family Office. You will partner closely with Tax leadership to shape the direction of the business tax function, ensuring it evolves alongside the organization's growth and investment activity.

As Director, Business Tax, You Will:

  • Own and oversee the accurate and timely filing of business tax returns (with a focus on Form 1120S), quarterly tax projections, and tax provisions across the enterprise.
  • Provide leadership on multi-state tax matters, including apportionment, composite and withholding requirements, sales & use considerations, and franchise taxes.
  • Direct and manage state, federal, and sales tax audits, including audit strategy, coordination with advisors, and stakeholder communication.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to business leadership by developing deep knowledge of operating models, business plans, and strategic initiatives to deliver value-driven tax planning and optimization.
  • Lead sophisticated tax planning initiatives, including strategies related to

  • Advise on the tax-efficient structuring and execution of acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic transactions, partnering closely with Finance, Legal, and external advisors.
  • Establish and drive standardization, automation, and continuous improvement of tax workflows, including data intake, apportionment, e-filing, and workpaper processes.
  • Research complex tax issues and distill findings into clear, actionable guidance for executive leadership and business partners.
  • Partner closely with the Family Office to ensure alignment of tax positions and proactively communicate tax implications impacting shareholders.
  • Monitor tax law changes, regulatory guidance, and court decisions; evaluate enterprise-wide impact and recommend strategies to minimize risk and optimize outcomes.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team, setting priorities, reviewing work, building bench strength, and fostering a high-performing, collaborative culture.
