About Vets Without Borders Ireland
Vets Without Borders Ireland (VWBI) Do you bring strong financial, accounting, or risk management expertise? Vets Without Borders Ireland (VWBI) is a small non-profit organisation supporting small-scale livestock farmers, their families, and communities across the Global South.
By strengthening livestock health, welfare, and husbandry practices, VWBI contributes to sustainable livelihoods, food security, and resilient communities. We are in a transitional period and are ambitious for the future of the organisation. Membership of the Board of Vets Without Borders Ireland offers a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the financial stewardship and long-term sustainability of a unique international charity.
VWBI is seeking to appoint a Board Member with a Finance background. This individual will play a key role in supporting financial oversight, risk management, and fiduciary responsibility, while contributing to the organisation’s overall strategic direction. Our values are solidarity, knowledge sharing, collaboration, respect and learning. This is a non-executive, strategic role, focused on financial governance and oversight rather than day-to-day financial management.
Key Responsibilities- Contribute actively to board deliberations, strategy, and decision-making
- Provide oversight and guidance on financial management, budgeting, and financial reporting
- Support the board in fulfilling its fiduciary duties and ensuring financial sustainability
- Oversee risk management processes, internal controls, and financial compliance
- Support the development and monitoring of financial policies and procedures
- Support the annual audit process, as required
- Assess organisational performance against financial and strategic objectives
- Act at all times in the best interests of VWBI, upholding high standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability
- Attendance at approximately five board meetings per year
- Typically one in-person meeting annually, with remaining meetings held online in the evenings
- Willingness to contribute time and expertise between meetings, where appropriate
- Board positions are voluntary and unpaid

- Experience of financial governance within an international, mission-driven charity
- Collaboration with a committed, skilled, and diverse board
- Significant professional experience in finance, accounting, audit, risk, or financial management
- Strong understanding of financial governance, fiduciary responsibilities, and financial controls
- Experience reviewing budgets, financial statements, and organisational financial performance
- Ability to think strategically and contribute constructively at board level
- Sound judgement, attention to detail, and a high standard of integrity
- Confidence to provide constructive challenge and support continuous improvement
- Experience in the charity or non-profit sector is desirable but not essential
Previous board experience is beneficial but not required.
