Overview

Macdonald & Company is pleased to be exclusively retained to find and appoint a Director of Finance for a Family Office based in Houston. The role is in office full time.

We are seeking a highly capable, hands-on finance leader to join a Houston-based family office overseeing a diverse portfolio of private investments across equity, credit, and structured opportunities. This is a pivotal opportunity to be among the first dedicated finance hires, helping to establish the systems, structure, and reporting foundation that will scale with the platform’s growth.

The role will initially focus on supporting a broad range of investments and family office activities, including portfolio companies, SPVs, and personal investment entities. Over time, the platform intends to launch an SBIC fund, and this role will help prepare the financial infrastructure and reporting capabilities to support that future initiative.

This is an entrepreneurial environment where you’ll work directly with the principals, taking ownership of the details while contributing to strategic decision-making as the investment platform continues to evolve.

Key Responsibilities
  • Phase 1:
    First 3–6 Months
    • Lead consolidated monthly, quarterly, and annual closes across multiple family entities, SPVs, and portfolio investments.
    • Prepare, review, and present financial statements and key performance metrics.
    • Build and maintain cash flow forecasts and oversee liquidity management.
    • Manage relationships with external advisors.
    • Support investment diligence and financial modeling.
    • Track portfolio performance and produce variance analyses.
  • Phase 2: 6–18+ Months
    • Design and implement scalable financial systems and dashboards.
    • Develop portfolio and platform-level KPIs.
    • Manage banking relationships.
    • Oversee consolidated reporting across all family office activities.
    • Recruit and mentor finance staff.
    • Support preparation for a future SBIC fund launch.
  • Qualifications
    • 5–10 years of relevant finance or accounting experience.
    • Strong technical accounting and reporting skills.
    • Fund accounting or SBIC exposure is a plus.
    • Strong analytical and modeling skills.
    • High integrity and discretion.
    Nice to Have
    • CPA, CFA, or similar certification.
    • Experience with BI/reporting tools.
    • Family office or private investment experience.
