The Chief Financial Officer plays a critical role in advancing the organization's mission by delivering accurate, timely, and transparent financial information to stakeholders, including leadership, Board members, funders, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee all accounts, ledgers, sub-ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with GAAP/GASB standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Produce complete and accurate monthly financial statements for presentation to the Audit and Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.
• Manage relationships with financial institutions, including oversight of compliance with investment policies.
• Develop and maintain a multi-year, sustainable financial outlook in partnership with the CEO, senior leadership, and the Audit and Finance Committee.
• Develop and maintain long-term cash flow projections for operations.
• Conduct weekly reviews of accounts payable and approve check and ACH disbursements.
• Monitor bank accounts and cash flow on an ongoing basis.
• Oversee payroll functions and related recordkeeping, including payroll reviews, retirement plan uploads, quarterly payroll tax filings, insurance, and W-2 and 1099 processes.
• Lead preparation for the annual audit and ensure timely completion and filing of the annual Form 990.
• Review and post monthly journal entries and allocations, oversee the monthly close process, and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
• Partner with the Development team to prepare grant budgets and financial reports for funders.
• Analyze financial data at the request of the CEO and other stakeholders and prepare ad hoc financial reports as needed.
• Monitor project and program budgets, keeping executive leadership informed of performance and variances.
• Collaborate with the CEO on the annual budgeting process and conduct periodic reviews of budget-to-actual results.
• Participate in weekly leadership team meetings to review operations and advance organizational objectives.
• Serve as a liaison with Human Resources on personnel and confidential employment matters requiring discretion and judgment.
• Contribute, alongside the leadership team, to fostering a positive, supportive, and stakeholder-centric work environment.
Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will bring experience from a complex nonprofit organization with multiple program components and demonstrate the following:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance with a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit fund accounting; CPA preferred.
• Strong goal orientation with a collaborative, team-focused mindset.
• Hands-on leadership style with full ownership of departmental responsibilities and outcomes.
• Proven experience coordinating audits and reporting to Boards and other stakeholders.
• Broad nonprofit accounting expertise, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and investment accounting.
• Demonstrated success in grants management, compliance, and financial reporting.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft applications and accounting and reporting systems; experience with nonprofit platforms such as Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is a plus.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to present information clearly and strategically.
• High level of maturity and discretion in handling confidential employment and organizational information.
• Ability to communicate financial information effectively to audiences with varying levels of financial expertise.
• A reputation for integrity, credibility, and commitment to mission-driven work.
This role operates on a hybrid schedule, with standard in-office hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The position is based in Houston and may require occasional evening or weekend hours depending on organizational needs.
