State & Local Tax Manager – Indirect Tax
As a State & Local Tax Manager, you will oversee and complete tax projects, provide innovative tax planning, consulting and compliance services for a variety of clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to venture‑backed startups. Your role will involve business development, audit leadership, voluntary disclosure analysis, sales‑tax liability determination, multi‑jurisdictional compliance oversight, client communication, federal collaboration, technical memorandum drafting, and staff supervision.
Responsibilities- Engage in business development activities—prepare proposals, present webinars, and collaborate with other service lines to market comprehensive tax strategies for prospective clients.
- Lead state and local tax audits and advocate for clients throughout the controversy process.
- Review voluntary disclosure agreements, nexus studies, and taxability analyses.
- Determine sales‑tax liabilities based upon multi‑jurisdictional revenue and review multi‑jurisdictional sales and use‑tax compliance returns.
- Maintain communication with clients to ensure satisfaction, meet deadlines, remain current on legislative changes, and lead change effectively.
- Collaborate with Federal Tax Compliance Groups to ensure maximized multi‑jurisdictional strategy.
- Research complex client issues and draft technical tax memoranda to address solutions.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate the performance of seniors and associates.
- 4+ years relevant work experience in an accounting firm, with at least 3 years of State & Local Tax experience.
- Bachelor’s degree (or advanced degree) in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field (preferred).
- Advanced credential allowing client representation before the IRS (e.g., CPA or JD).
- Self‑starter with initiative to seek out opportunities and ability to work successfully in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment.
- Proficient use of technology.
