Job Summary
The Staff Engineering Technician functions in a senior-level engineering technician capacity, providing advanced drafting and design support for electrical substation projects. With minimal supervision, this role performs complex tasks using AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE) and Substation Design Suite (SDS) to create and modify high-quality engineering deliverables. The position may also provide technical guidance to junior staff and support project coordination activities.
Candidates must have hands-on experience in the substation industry. While SDS experience is strongly preferred, candidates with AutoCAD Electrical experience and substation industry background may be considered, with SDS training provided by the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced drafting and design tasks for substation engineering projects using AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE) and SDS
- Create, modify, and maintain engineering deliverables based on project design inputs
- Independently support drafting and design activities with minimal supervision
- Develop less complex design concepts and prepare detailed drawings and documentation
- Perform calculations such as material take-offs, quantities, and estimates
- Apply knowledge of engineering standards, document control processes, codes, and Black & Veatch procedures
- Ensure deliverables comply with applicable project standards and quality requirements
- Review design inputs for consistency, accuracy, and completeness
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and change management efforts
Project Coordination & Support
- Coordinate deliverables with internal engineering teams and other disciplines to avoid conflicts or errors
- Support field activities as required
- Assist with project closeout activities, including as-built drawings and final documentation
- Provide technical guidance and work direction to junior engineering technicians
- Share knowledge of tools, processes, and emerging technologies
- Contribute to team development through mentoring and collaboration
Client Focus
- Support internal client needs while developing an understanding of external client requirements and priorities
Required Skills & Experience
- 3–5 years of experience using AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE)/Auto Desk Inventor in the substation industry
- Substation Design Suite (SDS) experience preferred; candidates without SDS may be considered only if they have substation industry experience
- MUST have prior substation industry experience
- Candidates with ACADE only and no substation experience will not be considered
- Ability to work independently on drafting and design tasks
- Strong understanding of engineering standards, drawings, and document control practices
Education
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Engineering Technology, Electrical Drafting, or a related discipline preferred
- Equivalent practical experience in the substation industry will be considered
