Mechanical / Structural Engineer – Modular Industrial Facilities
Location: Northwest Houston, TX Area
Position Type: Full-Time | Onsite
OverviewAn established engineering and manufacturing organization is expanding its design team and seeking a Mechanical / Structural Engineer with experience in modular steel construction used in heavy industrial environments. This role focuses on the development of prefabricated building systems that house critical electrical and power distribution equipment, supporting projects throughout North America.
You will take ownership of the structural and mechanical configuration of factory-built enclosures such as power control buildings, equipment houses, and other skid‑mounted or modularized infrastructure designed for rapid deployment in energy and industrial settings.
What You’ll Be Doing- Engineer structural systems for modular steel buildings, including framing, enclosure assemblies, and integrated access structures.
- Design floor systems, wall panels, roof structures, equipment support steel, and transportation bases suitable for both shipment and installation.
- Develop connection strategies (bolted, welded, formed, or hybrid) that balance manufacturability, transport constraints, and field constructability.
- Generate fabrication‑ready drawings and 3D models aligned with shop production workflows.
- Perform structural analysis and calculations to validate performance under environmental and operational loads.
- Ensure compliance with applicable U.S. and Canadian building codes, structural standards, and industry regulations.
- Act as the subject matter expert for modular enclosure engineering within the organization.
- Guide designers and junior engineers in best practices related to prefabricated construction and steel design.
- Standardize repeatable design elements, calculation methods, and documentation to improve project efficiency.
- Contribute to product evolution, value engineering, and innovation initiatives focused on modularization.
- Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, manufacturing teams, and supply chain partners to ensure designs transition smoothly from concept to fabrication.
- Coordinate with specialty consultants such as fire protection, HVAC, and third‑party licensed engineers when required.
- Address multi‑discipline interface challenges between structural systems and installed electrical equipment.
- Support fabrication teams by resolving technical questions and optimizing designs for production.
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years working with prefabricated steel structures, equipment enclosures, or similar industrial building systems.
- Strong understanding of steel framing design (both hot‑rolled and cold‑formed members).
- Experience designing for transportable or skid‑mounted structures.
- Ability to develop and interpret structural calculations and connection details.
- Proficiency using AutoCAD or similar drafting platforms.
- Exposure to authority approval processes and jurisdictional coordination.
- Knowledge of energy compliance methodologies and building envelope performance requirements.
- Experience with 3D modeling tools such as Solid Works, Inventor, or Revit.
- Familiarity with fire‑rated wall systems, including specialty industrial ratings.
- Understanding of blast‑resistant or hardened structure design principles.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
This position plays a central role in delivering highly engineered, factory‑built infrastructure that reduces field construction time, improves safety, and supports critical power and automation projects. The engineer in this role directly influences how these modular facilities are designed, manufactured, transported, and deployed in demanding industrial environments.
