OverviewThe Houston District of the Texas Department of Transportation is looking for a talented Transportation Engineer to join our District Pavement Office. As a Pavement Designer, you will play a vital role in developing innovative pavement designs for both rigid and flexible systems, ensuring durability and safety across our transportation network. In this position, you’ll assist the District Pavement Engineer with plan reviews, coordinate field data collection with consultants and in-house teams, and perform forensic evaluations of pavement failures to recommend effective repair strategies.

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision.
Assists in evaluating pavement products and pavement condition data.
Develops and/or reviews engineering‑related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
- Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.
- Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
- Performs pavement designs and makes recommendations.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Includes all essential duties listed for Transportation Engineer I, as well as:
- Evaluates pavement products and pavement condition data.
- Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science, or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
