Opportunity

As a Senior Substation Structural Engineer you will lead the design and analysis of substation projects. Your responsibilities will include managing budgets and schedules, supervising engineers, and maintaining client relationships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes.
  • Collect and assimilate data, perform research and prepare calculations per Black & Veatch and industry standards.
  • Develop recommendations for equipment and materials; maintain budget, schedule and quality compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance to the project team and assist with business development activities.
  • Supervise engineering staff on medium to high‑complexity projects and act as a technical specialist.
  • Apply and update engineering standards, codes and Black & Veatch policies.
  • Support continuous improvement, change management and quality program compliance.
  • Prepare complex engineering deliverables, conduct research, manage data and perform advanced calculations.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, define project schedules, and ensure client interests are met.
  • Mentor team members, participate in career planning, and support administrative functions such as timesheet approval.
  • Manage resources, budgets and tool procurement for engineering projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Advanced knowledge of structural engineering design principles and standards.
  • Experience with 3D analysis and design software (RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, etc.) and foundation design tools (LPile, RISA Foundation, SP-Mats).
  • Proficiency in structural connection and miscellaneous calculations with Excel or Mathcad.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, leadership, conflict management and team building skills.
  • Client interaction experience with a proven ability to build relationships and pursue business opportunities.
  • Experience in utility‑scale substation design or related renewable projects (preferred).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 11 years related work experience.
  • Active engineering registration or licensure applicable to the region of practice.
  • Ability to complete pre‑employment screening (background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records).
Certifications
  • Active engineering registration or lic explorer – required for support engineer of record (EOR) responsibilities.
Work Environment / Physical Demands

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days, based on manager discretion and job performance.
