Job Title: Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer

Location: San Diego, CA

Hours/

Schedule:

Monday–Friday, 8 am to 5 pm (flexibility for early/late hours or occasional weekends as needed)

Compensation: $50-58 hourly, DOQ

Type: Contract

Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer supports environmental, health, and safety programs within a biotech and laboratory environment, with a strong emphasis on hazardous and biological waste management. This role partners across research, manufacturing, and facilities to strengthen training, ensure regulatory compliance, and support inspections and incident response in alignment with local and state requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Manage hazardous, chemical, and biological waste programs, including chemical waste handling and spill response.
  • Ensure compliance with San Diego County HAZMAT requirements and CERS reporting and documentation.
  • Develop, administer, and improve EHS training programs, including in‑person training for new and existing employees.
  • Coordinate compliance activities related to regulatory agencies, including County HAZMAT, Fire Department, and Cal/OSHA.
  • Conduct internal EHS inspections to ensure readiness for external regulatory inspections.
  • Support incident response activities, including investigation, documentation, and follow‑up actions.
  • Maintain EHS records, reports, and documentation to support audits and inspections.
  • Partner with facilities and operations on safety programs, including lockout/tagout and chemical safety practices.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams across research and manufacturing to promote safe work practices.
Qualifications Must Have
  • Strong experience with hazardous, chemical, and biological waste management.
  • Working knowledge of San Diego County HAZMAT requirements and the CERS online portal.
  • Experience with chemical safety, spill response, and biohazardous waste programs.
  • Background in a biotech or laboratory‑based environment.
  • Ability to develop and deliver in‑person EHS training programs.
  • Experience supporting regulatory inspections and compliance reporting.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with GMP environments.
  • Vivarium experience.
  • Facilities management experience, including lockout/tagout programs.
  • Experience supporting stormwater compliance programs.
