System Engineer – Valmet (Houston, TX)
Join Valmet as a System Engineer and shape the future of industrial analytical solutions in the Houston, Texas region. This role focuses on consulting across green & brown field projects, from requirement analysis to detailed design and implementation.
Responsibilities- Conduct site walk‑downs and sample point reviews, recommend new sample point/probe designs, and plan field bundle routing.
- Collect customer data for equipment datasheet preparation; review existing equipment, troubleshoot, capture photos, take measurements, create redline drawings, detail utilities for new or modified equipment, and supervise installation inspections.
- Travel to plant sites as required; travel is typically 1‑2 days per visit, with occasional longer assignments.
- Communicate project requirements to Valmet internal teams (sales, quotes, engineering, design, project management, production, test, supply chain) and provide support throughout the project lifecycle.
- Determine appropriate analytical technology and system integration solutions.
- Prepare written recommendations for analysis improvements, equipment replacement, and maintenance reductions.
- Provide onsite support and scope development for new projects.
- Prepare datasheets, analyzer lists, and preliminary drawings; direct designers on detailed drawings for shelters/racks, power/signal wiring, utility piping, sample conditioning, probe schematics, alarm system wiring, fabrication, and demo drawings.
- Specify Bill of Materials, approve material requisitions, and support craftsman during production and technician during testing/FAT. Finalize design documentation to represent the “as‑built” condition.
- BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics.
- 10+ years successfully in an analyzer project engineering role; associate technical degree and strong background in analytical technology/system considered.
- Strong communication skills—including complex design requirements with customers, the design team, and craftsmen.
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Knowledge of AutoCAD, Solid Edge/Solid Works, ChemCAD, and Visual Basic is a plus.
- Industry‑specific knowledge: complete design of analyzer system integration projects (plan views, elevations, power/signal, utility piping, sample conditioning, probes, alarm systems). Perform calculations for sample lag, pressure drop, line sizing, dew‑point, and electrical sizing (NEC, IEC, API, NFPA, ISA). Familiar with hazardous area classifications (Class I Div 1/2, ATEX Zone 1/2) and NEMA 7 equipment.
- Experience with gas chromatographs, UV/IR continuous gas analyzers, paramagnetic analyzers, FT‑NIR, CEMS, pH & conductivity, TOC, zirconium oxide catalysts, and applications such as process, stack O₂/combustible, CEMS, HRVOC, Subpart Ja.
- Knowledge of Modbus, OPC, TCP/IP Ethernet protocols and petrochemical or refinery electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, structural specs.
- Ability to read and understand P&IDs and provide recommendations/redlines.
- Project experience at a petrochemical or refinery site.
- 10+ years as a lead engineer for analytical system integration projects.
- Registered P.E. in the State of Texas.
