Overview

The Traffic Engineering team is seeking a Graduate Engineer to join our group of skilled engineers, engineers-in-training, and project managers. In this role, the primary responsibilities of a Graduate Engineer include conducting traffic engineering studies and reviewing, planning, designing, and/or managing transportation engineering projects.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with traffic operations and transportation planning issues.
  • Conduct traffic engineering studies under the guidance of a Traffic Engineer.
  • Develop, review, and/or evaluate traffic control plans, pavement and signage plans, signal designs, and traffic safety programs.
  • Review traffic impact analyses for various types of developments.
  • Review, QA/QC, and/or prepare plans and professional documents as needed to support client requirements.
  • Ensure deliverables meet the client's preference, the Office of the County Engineer's standards, regulatory compliance, and permitting requirements.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with management, Harris County elected officials and representatives, external agencies, and the public as necessary.
  • Assist with recovery efforts following local disasters to ensure Harris County has safe infrastructure following the event.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program in the United States or Board-designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET
  • A Board-approved combination of a Bachelor's degree in one of the mathematical, physical, or engineering sciences and a graduate degree in engineering from a university with an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate program in the same discipline of engineering
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology from a TAC/ABET-accredited program
  • A Bachelor's or graduate degree in mathematical, physical, or engineering science approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to deal tactfully with a diverse group of people in a professional manner in a complex organization.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction documents and engineering studies.
  • A valid Texas driver’s license is required, and the ability to drive a County vehicle to various job sites as necessary.

Preferences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related fields.
Licensure
  • Working knowledge of Harris County Regulations, Standards, and Details.
  • Experience with software programs such as GIS, AutoCAD, PC Warrant, Guide Sign, Tru Traffic, and Synchro/Simtraffic.
  • Experience coordinating with external agencies (e.g. COH, TxDOT, etc.).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to deal tactfully with a diverse group of people in a professional manner in a complex organization.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction documents and engineering studies.
General Information
  • Position Type:
    Full-Time | Regular | 40 hours per week.
  • Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Subject to early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays at times, depending upon the project or workload.

Salary
:
Commensurate with experience, based on 26 pay periods.

Physical Demands and Environmental Exposure: Most assignments will be performed in an office, meeting, or operations command center environment, but some field work may be required. May be required to work extended work hours during activation of disaster recovery operations for an unspecified length of time (varies based on the extent of the event). This position requires bending, stooping, and lifting up to 25 lbs.,

as well as frequent walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and ascending/descending stairs. The physical demands described here are representative of those required of an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
