Field/Service Technician, Electrical Engineering
This role supports the testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of protection and control systems and utility substation equipment. It requires strong technical aptitude, adherence to IEEE/NETA standards, accurate documentation, and professional collaboration with clients and team members. Travel, flexible hours, and physical capability are essential.
Responsibilities
- Apply current industry testing and commissioning standards (IEEE, NETA).
- Provide strong customer service and maintain professional client and team relationships.
- Maintain accurate communication, records, drawings, and daily/weekly project documentation.
- Perform and learn advanced troubleshooting of substation and protection/control systems (equipment issues, wiring/drawing errors, abnormal test results, battery faults).
- Support and participate in technically complex commissioning activities and project meetings.
- Identify risks and follow all site risk assessment and safety procedures.
- Learn proper isolation/restoration procedures to prevent unintended system operations.
- Execute, review, and approve test results; ensure all results are recorded and distributed.
- Assist engineers/technicians during testing, commissioning, startup, and formal walkdowns.
Equipment Examples: breakers (SF6/oil/vacuum), transformers, capacitor banks, CTs/PTs, CCVTs, wave traps, switch gear, arrestors, reclosers, cables, DC systems, grounding, generators, station service equipment.
Test Examples: SF6 and oil testing, vacuum integrity, insulation/winding resistance, power factor, excitation, SFRA, ratio/polarity, dielectric withstand, motion/operation, contact resistance, impedance, capacitance/inductance, battery and cell tests.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Associate degree or equivalent technical training (e.g., Journeyman Electrician, Prime Power, Navy Nuclear, NETA Level III/IV).
- Basic electrical systems knowledge; ability to read AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, one-lines/three-lines.
- Ability to interpret drawings and use test equipment software.
- Willingness to travel for extended periods and work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Strong verbal/written communication; proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe.
- Ability to operate or be certified to operate a man-lift.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; accommodations available as needed.

Experience:
- SF6/Oil/Vacuum Breakers: 5 years (Required)
- SF6 Gas, Oil Sampling, Vacuum Bottle Integrity : 5 years (Required)
