Oxy Chem Real Time Power Trader – Power Group

Oxy Chemical Corp is looking for a Real Time Power Trader in Houston, Texas to manage power generation and load in ERCOT and MISO markets, optimizing schedules and trading decisions in real‑time.

As a key member of the Power Group, you will interface with production facilities, regional transmission operators, and independent system operators, deploying analytical, decision‑making, and risk‑management skills to maximize profitability and ensure regulatory compliance.

Job Responsibilities
  • Monitor, evaluate, and implement scheduling, dispatch, and trading of physical power and ancillary services around Oxy Chem’s assets.
  • Continuously monitor the status of IT systems and models that submit asset parameters to the markets; identify issues such as loss of telemetry or visibility to markets, and direct Oxy IT or plant personnel to resolve them promptly while keeping grid operators informed.
  • Serve as Oxy Chem’s primary real‑time contact during critical electrical grid events, directing assets to adjust load during high‑price events or ensuring cogen facilities follow grid‑operator dispatch set points.
  • Maintain situational awareness of market conditions and monitor asset parameters, ancillary services, telemetry, and outages to ensure compliance with market rules while maximizing profitability.
  • Communicate effectively with asset operators, asset managers, and real‑time trading colleagues on market events and analysis, fostering a consistent flow of information and enabling strong decision‑making.
  • Provide timely, clear communication to ISOs regarding deviations from normal operations to maintain compliance with all rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO dispatch instructions, ancillary service deployments, and directives consistent with applicable regulatory standards, protocols, guides, business practice manuals, and tariffs.
  • Build and maintain strong industry relationships in key trading regions to cover shortages caused by unexpected load or generation outages.
  • Maintain required training levels to ensure effectiveness and readiness for market‑rule changes in relevant NERC regions and ISOs.
  • Manage multiple P/L spreadsheets to capture gains and losses.
  • Complete fast‑paced training to achieve required competency levels within specified timelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, or a related technical/accounting field (preferred).
  • NERC certification (RC/TO).
  • Willingness to work a rotating schedule of 12‑hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with shift partners.
  • At least two years of experience in real‑time trading or operations (preferred), or a strong analytical/quantitative background with knowledge of energy trading.
  • Ability to quickly grasp the power scheduling and optimization process across front‑office, mid‑office, and back‑office functions.
  • Procedural and process‑improvement mindset with strong analytical skills.
  • Superior attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure while managing multiple tasks.
  • Tech skills:
    Excel, MS Teams, API Integration, Power BI, ETRM (OATI).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial competency in U.S. energy markets with direct P&L responsibility.
  • Highly detailed and willing to learn with accountability in a team environment.
  • Understanding of system and ETRM enhancements.
  • Basic knowledge of market products in ERCOT and MISO.
  • Basic knowledge of NERC requirements, market protocols, BPMs, and tariffs.
