Description

Provides information to and advises both enrolled and prospective students regarding the academic programs offered by the University or a specific department, including requirements for admission and retention through graduation; may coordinate the work of entry level academic advisors.

Responsibilities
  • Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding academic programs and curriculums.
    2. Analyzes and processes degree plans, graduation applications, grade change forms, and general petitions.
  • Maintains student files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  • Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic suspension, as well as financial aid reinstatements; provides retention services for students on probation.
  • May assist in conducting orientation sessions for groups of incoming new students.
  • May assist in recruiting high school and community college students and may make presentations at special events.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.

Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.

This posting is for a Learning Abroad Advisor position housed within the Learning Abroad office in the Office of the Provost at the University of Houston. The primary purpose of this position is to advise students from the Colleges of Architecture, Arts, and Design (ARCH); the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts (COTA); the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS);

the College of Education (EDUC); and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) on Learning Abroad opportunities, scholarships, and application processes.

The Learning Abroad Advisor position is responsible for advising and recruiting students for Learning Abroad opportunities, with a focus on affiliate program coordination. This position serves as the primary liaison to affiliate provider partners, manages affiliate program outreach and communication, and ensures program information is accurate and current in Terra Dotta and on Learning Abroad marketing channels. This position also assists with Learning Abroad events, scholarship information sessions, and pre-departure orientations.

Additionally, this advisor oversees social media and communications strategy for the Learning Abroad office, developing and implementing content that promotes programs, scholarships, student stories, and global learning engagement across campus. The advisor collaborates closely with the Learning Abroad team, student ambassadors, and the Office of the Provost’s communications units to ensure brand consistency and impact.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising for Learning Abroad or study abroad programs.
  • Experience coordinating or liaising with affiliate program providers.
  • Experience in social media management, marketing, or communications.
  • Experience using Terra Dotta or similar international education management software.
  • Experience studying, working, or living abroad.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred.
  • Experience advising for the Gilman International Scholarship or similar national awards.
