Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall program of vocal music for the assigned campus. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular choir activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and district requirements. Plan and administer choir activities in accordance with campus and district expectations. Plan and prepare to provide students the opportunity to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.
Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree in Music from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Valid music certification
  • Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certificate
  • ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of curriculum/instruction and overall operation of vocal music program
  • Knowledge of state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing choir activities
  • Able to manage budget, personnel and student behavior
  • Able to instruct students and interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
  • Minimum of one (1) year teaching and choir directing experience, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies
  • Engage and plan with high school choir director(s) to align program curricular and extracurricular activities with "feeder" high school choir programs, as determined by the high school director.
  • Direct middle school vocal performers, including beginning classes, all large choir performance ensembles, soloists, and small ensembles.
  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility to participate in choir.
  • Provide for choir participation at extracurricular events, including various concert venues such as concerts, football games, community events, and at all UIL and TMEA activities.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and to ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
  • Recommend policies to improve program.
  • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all choir equipment and performance apparel.
  • Develop and implement plans for choral music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Accompany and supervise on all trips.
  • Actively participate in District choral music events.
  • Coordinate and implement an extra-curricular program of instruction for students to participate in District, Region, Area, and All-State TMEA events.
Student Growth and Development
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support mission of the school district.
  • Collaborate with intermediate choir directors to ensure recruitment/retention activities foster increased program enrollment.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook and choir handbook.
  • Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips activities and arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Work to provide campus, District, and community awareness of choir activities and performances.
Budget and Inventory
  • Support choir booster club activities.
  • Develop and administer budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
