Description JOB PURPOSEInstructors will provide academic enrichment and instruction to program scholars in English/Language Arts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESProvides academic support to Upward Bound participants from target schools. Designs and delivers meaningful and relevant academic lessons in the subject area assigned and/or certified. Addresses individual learning styles (increasing strengths and decreasing weaknesses). Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom discussions. Prepares course materials, such as lesson plans, in-class assignments, and handouts. Informs students of the procedures for completing and submitting class work.
Returns assignments to students in accordance with established deadlines. Prepares and/or proctors pre-/post- examinations. Evaluates and grades students' class work, assignments, and papers. Prepares and delivers lectures to students on relevant topics. Advises students on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues. Plans, evaluates, and revises curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction. Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Director (or designee).

SUPERVISION RECEIVED SUPERVISION EXERCISED Requirements MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSPrior teaching experience is strongly preferred. Evidence of strong organizational and professional skills. Computer literacy. Successful completion of applicable licenses, professional credentials or certifications strongly preferred.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSPreference will be given to individuals that have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s targeted population.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTSBachelor’s degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university and/or teacher certification in core content area.
REQUIRED SKILLSKnowledge of high school curriculum. Ability to maintain classroom management. Computer skills include word processing and database applications. Ability to work independently to organize, set priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Effective presentation skills. Ability to establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with program staff, scholars, and parents. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred.
Must be willing to supervise on outings and travel (both locally and overnight) with students.
The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work‑related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers, and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Attendance at conferences and professional development are required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
