Coordinator-Academic Guidance and Counseling

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

The Academic Guidance and Counseling Coordinator provides district-level leadership and coordination in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, data-driven academic guidance and counseling program for all schools. This role ensures alignment of counseling practices with district academic priorities, graduation requirements, college and career readiness initiatives, and equitable student outcomes.

The Academic Guidance and Counseling Coordinator acts with integrity, supports organizational goals, demonstrates the ability to inspire, develop, and motivate others, and is committed to championing the academic, social-emotional, and postsecondary success of all students while supporting counselors, registrars, and campus leadership across the district.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

* Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling or a related field

* A valid Texas School Counselor certificate

* Three years of school counseling experience

Preferred:

* Able to speak English and Spanish fluently

* Five years of school counseling experience

* Two years of experience as a lead school counselor at a public, private or charter school

* High school counseling experience

* Two years of teaching experience in a public, private or charter school

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/

SKILLS:

* Strong knowledge of graduation requirements, endorsements, pathways and post-secondary readiness indicators.

* Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills

* Effective interpersonal, counseling practices, written and verbal communication, and technical skills.

* Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with staff, students, parents, administrators and community partners

* Strong organizational, problem-solving and time-management skills

MAJOR

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* Collaborate with the Director of Academic Guidance and Counseling in the development, implementation and evaluation of district counseling initiatives

* Serve in an advisory capacity to counselors, principals, registrars, and teachers on academic guidance and counseling practices

* Research, recommend and support implementation of evidence-based academic guidance and counseling programs and resources

* Provide leadership to strengthen and align campus counseling programs with district academic goals and accountability measures

* Promote and apply equitable and ethical policies, procedures, and practices that positively impact student access, achievement, and outcomes

* Collaborate with high school counselors and registrars to evaluate in-state, out-of-state, private school, virtual school, and homeschool transcripts

* Serve as a primary point of contact for secondary counselors and registrars to resolve complex transcript, graduation, and policy-related issues

* Collaborate with the Curriculum Dept in the development, maintenance and communication of the Education Planning Guide for middle school and high school

* Effectively communicate district policies, procedures, and guidance related to academic planning and counseling services

* Encourage and support innovative academic guidance practices that address identified student and campus needs

* Monitor and ensure systems are in place for counselors to maintain accurate academic records and monitor student progress toward graduation

* Coordinate and support mentoring programs for new counselors, including mentor training and ongoing supports

* Support counselor professional growth through staff development, meetings, professional learning communities to enhance their job-related knowledge and skills

* Secure consultants, specialists, and appropriate community resources for counseling staff and other stakeholders in order to impact student success

* Collaborate with the Post Secondary Success Coordinator to coordinate, monitor and support academic planning, CCMR and post-secondary planning for student success

* Monitor and support systemic transition programs (5th-6th grade and 8th-9th grade) to ensure continuity of academic planning

* Collaborate with CTE counselors to support endorsement selection and alignment with student academic and career goals

* Provide guidance and support to counselors on implementation of current graduation plans and academic pathways

* Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate responsive academic guidance supports

* Advocate for the role and impact of Professional School Counselors in advancing student achievement and readiness

* Engage in continuous professional learning and leadership development through professional organizations

* Conduct all duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner

* Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Academic Guidance and Counseling
