Overview
We are seeking a Barber Instructor to advance the institution’s tradition of excellence in academics, student life and community service. The position is located in Houston, Texas, System Wide. Requisition #25002IX. Post date:

- Provide expertise and knowledge that support the college curriculum and programs.
- Establish courses following accepted higher education standards, teach using a variety of effective methodologies, and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning.
- Teach a maximum load of contact hours each semester in area(s) of competency and participate as a part-time instructor in department, division and college activities.
- Demonstrate skill and/or knowledge in the barbering discipline and continuously improve instruction through innovative methodologies and delivery methods.
- Develop and use syllabi for each course or laboratory and submit copies to the department chair.
- Plan, develop, and use diverse teaching methods and materials to meet course objectives for students with varying backgrounds and learning styles.
- Evaluate and communicate student progress in a timely manner; maintain accurate student records and submit related reports as requested.
- Review, evaluate, and recommend textbooks and learning materials; teach at various times and locations as needed; use facilities and equipment responsibly.
- Demonstrate competence and interest in the use of technology in the classroom and explore new instructional methodologies.
- Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community; provide access to students via posted office hours and electronic communication.
- Provide advice and assistance regarding instructional or program-specific issues; present information on academic fields, transfer opportunities, work opportunities (co-ops, part-time, work-study), and career options.
- Create and maintain a website with relevant information and work with the Chair on advising activities as needed.
- Establish annual objectives for professional growth in consultation with the department chair.
- Keep pace with developments in the discipline and apply technologies that support student learning.
- Participate in self-, department-, and college-evaluation processes.
- Participate in institutional service activities, committee meetings, and departmental/campus events; adhere to all policies and procedures of the institution.
- Contribute to activities that promote the college’s mission and assist in maintaining program and college accreditation standards.
- Engage in articulation and collaboration with secondary and post-secondary institutions as needed.
- Education:
An Associate degree or higher in any field is required. Class A Barber Operator license and Barber Instructor license are required. Industry-recognized credentials, professional development, and a minimum of five years’ directly-related work experience may be accepted in lieu of the education requirement. - Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the barber industry. - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work in a diverse environment; willingness to teach day or evening classes at multiple sites; proficiency with a variety of computer software; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; sensitivity to diverse student backgrounds; ability to inspire and motivate students; self-discipline and ability to manage others.
