Primary PurposeAssist high school special education students with significant disabilities in various employment settings for nonpaid training experiences (work-related training) under the close supervision of a Work-Based Learning teacher.
Qualifications/SkillsEducation/Certification:
- Minimum of 48 college hours or high school diploma/equivalent plus pass a District Assessment.
- Educational Aide Certification.
- Knowledge regarding disabilities preferred.
- Ability to assist students in an organized set of educational and skill-building activities per their individual education plans that are intended to prepare them for employment while they are still in school.
- Ability to assist with travel training as part of the students’ post-secondary coordinated set of activities.
- Fluent in English (speaking and writing).
- Ability to assist with lifting, toileting, feeding and other daily living skills as needed.
- Bus driver training as needed, or as required.
- Background related to working with children and parents.
Instructional Support:
- Adhere to Texas Education Agency and district policies and procedures.
- Assist in carrying out the instructional/work-related training program under the supervision of the Work-Based Learning teacher.
- Assist Work-Based Learning teacher with job and task analysis at each worksite.
- Assist in job accommodations and adaptations for students at the worksite.
- Follow Work-Based Learning teacher instruction and guidance.
- Participate in planned staff development and professional growth activities related to work-based learning and other topics.
- Create instructional materials/visual schedules as needed.
- Systematically collect data and documentation and complete situational assessments for students at worksites to support data driven training decisions and plans.
Student Management:
- Work with students using appropriate interpersonal skills and to be a good role model in the development of their employability skills.
- Work with students to develop work-related attitudes, behaviors, and social and communication skills necessary to obtain and maintain future employment.
- Provide support to students in developing self-determination and self-advocacy skills.
- Provide direct support to students with disabilities as indicated in the students’ IEPS.
- Follow the students’ IEPS and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by related service staff.
- Proficient in students’ individual communication methods and strategies.
Other:
- Be flexible as the assigned job coach training worksites may change as student data, documentation, and transition assessments are reviewed periodically.
- Represent SBISD in the community, exhibiting professionalism at all times.
- Maintain positive relationships with community businesses that serve as SBISD worksites.
- Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to students’ needs and progress.
- Has reliable transportation to and from worksites.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Supervision of Students at the Worksite:
Provide the appropriate level of supervision and support at the worksite to ensure student safety while developing job skill sets and independence. Maintain close communication with the Work-Based Learning teacher and immediately report concerns or incidents as they occur.
