Nov 22, 2024. We are seeking an instructor to advance the college’s tradition of excellence in academics, student life and community service.

Summary
:
Provide the expertise and knowledge that support the college curriculum and programs. Establish courses following accepted higher education standards, teach students using a variety of effective methodologies, and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning. The role encompasses teaching and learning, academic advising, professional development, and institutional and community service. The incumbent will teach a maximum load of contact hours per semester in area(s) of competency and participate as a part-time instructor in the department, division, and college.

Faculty may be assigned to teach in modalities including face-to-face, hybrid, online (synchronous or asynchronous), or any combination of modalities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching: Demonstrate skill and/or knowledge in the teaching discipline.
  • Improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.
  • Develop and use a syllabus for each course or laboratory and submit a copy to the department chair.
  • Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to meet course objectives for students with differing backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Evaluate students and inform them of progress in a timely manner.
  • Keep accurate student records and submit related reports within timelines.
  • Review, evaluate, and recommend textbooks and learning materials.
  • Teach courses at various times and locations as needed; use equipment and facilities responsibly and assist with routine maintenance of instructional laboratories where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate competence and interest in technology in the classroom and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies.
  • Academic Advising: Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community; provide access to students via posted office hours, electronic communication, and other methods; provide advice on instructional or program-specific issues.
  • Present information on academic fields or programs, transfer opportunities, work opportunities, support services, scholarships, etc.; create and maintain a department website; work with the Chair on advising activities as needed.
  • Professional Development: Establish annual objectives for professional growth in consultation with the department chair; keep pace with developments in the discipline; learn technologies that support student learning; participate in evaluations at the self, department, and college level.
  • Institutional and Community Service: Participate in scheduled institutional service activities, committee meetings, and college events; adhere to HCCS policies; engage in activities to support accreditation and college planning; assist in curricula review and articulation with other institutions.
Qualifications

Education
:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or higher in Graphic Design/Illustration preferred. Copy of transcript conferring the required degree and certifications must accompany the application.

Experience
: 3 years of experience as a graphic designer or in a similar field within the last 5 years using analogue and digital methods to solve visual problems and create effective experiences/communication.

College-level online teaching experience and Apple Instruction Certification preferred.

Portfolio Requirements: 20 examples of recent design work, and 10–20 examples of student artwork via website or file-sharing service, or a link to a PDF (10 MB or less) with viewing permissions to ahermann.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

:

  • Demonstrated mastery of graphic editing software (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Strong online and print typographic principles.
  • Knowledge of Apple-based applications (Pages, Keynote, Garage Band) and current operating systems.
