Adjunct Instructor of Professional/Technical Spanish-Houston

OLLU, founded in 1895 by the Congregation of Divine Providence, is a coeducational comprehensive institution with an enrollment of more than 3,100 students. With its main residential campus in San Antonio and non-traditional programs in San Antonio, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley (La Feria), and online, OLLU has a presence in two of the largest cities in Texas, the border region, and literally around the world.

The University offers more than 30 undergraduate majors and minors, 14 master's programs and three doctoral programs through its College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and Leadership, and the College of Professional Studies. OLLU offers classes in daytime, evening, weekend and online formats.

Job Description

The School of Professional Studies (SPS) invites applications from qualified individuals to teach one or two sections of graduate courses in the following:

  • Professional and Technical Spanish for students earning the Psychological Services to Spanish Speaking Populations (PSSSP) Certification

Classes may be presented in face-to-face or hybrid/blended format that may include real-time video conferencing. Sections are available for faculty to teach on a per-semester basis as needed.

Fully online classes are only available through the main San Antonio campus and do not apply to this posting.

Responsibilities

Prepare syllabi, lectures, assignments, and assessments, as appropriate to the course under the supervision of a lead professor who will provide a sample syllabus and select the textbook(s) for the course. Be available for individual student assistance (outside class time) at least one hour per week per section, and/or respond to telephone or electronic communication from students within 24‑48 hours. A virtual classroom is provided for all sections through Blackboard and faculty are encouraged to utilize this technology.

Requirements

Minimum – Ph.D. in Spanish;
Culture, Literacy and Language;
Second‑Language Acquisition Theories and Practices; or Linguistics. The person must also have proficiency equivalent to a native speaker of Spanish and of English, and be familiar with current practices in language teaching/learning pedagogy.

Preferred – Experience teaching "heritage speakers." Knowledge of mental health matters would be a plus but is not required.
