Position: 2025-2026 Teacher - Special Education

Primary Purpose

Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and instructional materials to student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacities as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements
  • Minimum of one year student teaching or approved internship
Special Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of different disabilities and the associated special needs
  • Knowledge of station teaching and co‑teach models
  • Knowledge of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and IEP development and implementation
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Strategies
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop the IEP through the ARD Committee process.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings.
  • Monitor IEP implementation and effectiveness, assist with PLAAFP data, goal setting, and progress monitoring.
  • Create and implement instructional and skill development programs to demonstrate growth in reading and thinking.
  • Implement station teaching with general education staff to differentiate learning experiences.
  • Plan and use appropriate strategies, materials, and equipment reflecting student learning styles.
  • Develop lesson plans and work cooperatively with classroom teachers to differentiate curricula.
  • Employ mediated learning experiences and varied instructional techniques and media.
  • Use technology in teaching and learning processes.
Student Growth and Development
  • Conduct ongoing assessments through formal and informal testing.
  • Assist with coordinating, administering, and documenting state assessments.
  • Assist with implementation of all health services for special education students.
  • Consult with district and outside resources regarding education, social‑emotional, medical, and personal needs.
  • Participate in the transition process with the Campus Transition Coordinator.
  • Serve as a positive role model supporting the mission of Texans Can.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create a conducive learning environment appropriate for social, emotional, and physical development.
  • Provide Positive Behavioral Supports as needed.
  • Consult with classroom teachers regarding behavior management per IEP.
  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and materials appropriate to student needs and styles.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective expressive and written communication to present information accurately.
Other Duties
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Stay abreast of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

None.

Mental and physical demands include maintaining emotional control under stress, frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, moving small stacks of books and equipment, lifting and positioning students, controlling behavior through physical restraint, and exposure to biological hazards.
