Overview
Provides clinical expertise in patient care management for oncology patients referred for care in an MD Anderson facility practice setting. Also participates in administrative activities, clinical research, laboratory or translational research, education and quality and safety.
ResponsibilitiesClinical
- Practice clinical medicine in the standards set forth by the Texas Medical Board and the American Board of Surgery, balanced with other academic activities.
- Provide complete and thorough history and physical examinations. Perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.
- Develop and maintain a clinical practice for oncology patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
- Provide physician staffing for the outpatient and inpatient breast surgical oncology service at a level commensurate with that provided by other breast surgical oncologists with the same level of training and experience.
- Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all surgical procedure charge documents within five working days.
- Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames required by institutional policy. Dictate clearly and concisely; visually review documents as required.
- Correspond as appropriate in writing or by telephone with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
- Keep abreast of current approaches in patient management by attending continuing education conferences and assimilating information learned.
- Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone or in writing to other physicians.
- Serve as a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers, students, and clinical staff.
- Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.
- Work effectively within intense interpersonal relationships including with other physicians, patients, and subordinates.
Administration
- Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by the Department Chair. Provide verbal feedback as necessary.
- Complete appropriate paperwork or documents in a timely manner as required by institutional or departmental policy.
- Actively participate in departmental clinical programs or meetings including retreats and department-sponsored conferences.
- Adhere to all institutional and medical staff policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Support and actively participate in advancing departmental and institutional objectives across the MD Anderson Cancer Network.
- Support and actively participate in advancing high reliability, quality, and safety within the department/institution.
Research
- Actively engages in clinical or laboratory research and scholarly activities to enhance the academic environment of the department.
- Seek appropriate intramural and extramural funding mechanisms to support research activities through grant proposals.
- Develop collaborative activities in the specific area of research interest.
- Document research findings through publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national meetings.
Education/Teaching
- Attend and participate in Division/Department/Breast Program teaching and continuing education conferences including Grand Rounds, Morbidity & Mortality, multidisciplinary treatment, and surgical planning conferences.
- Provide a teaching environment in outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings for fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers across the MD Anderson network.
- Extramural
- Represent the Department of Breast Surgical Oncology in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to oncology. Will require travel to sites outside of Houston and, upon return, disseminating information learned to colleagues.
