This is a faculty position responsible to the Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine who reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine.

General Duties

The Assistant Professor, CFA will focus the majority of clinical activity in the Inpatient Service and must possess strong communication skills to interact with patients, family members, hospital staff and other faculty within the Institution. The Department of Hospital Medicine operates 24/7/365, so nocturnal shifts will be supported by the hospitalist physician. The Assistant Professor, CFA provides clinical expertise in patient care management and an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of Onco-Hospital Medicine.

The Assistant Professor, CFA must be fully ambulatory and have excellent bilateral manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, visual and auditory acuity to perform job functions. The Assistant Professor, CFA will be analytical to make judgments regarding patient medical problems and advise patients on methods to improve care. Emotional and psychological stability is required to manage patients and families in a compassionate and positive manner.

The Assistant Professor, CFA will participate in the development of clinical research studies and will be independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up as appropriate. Clinical procedures practiced will encompass those pertinent in delivering standard care to the patient.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administration

    Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.

  • Education/Teaching

    Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in internal medicine for medical residents and students who rotate through the Department of Hospital Medicine. Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which requires verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.

  • Research

    Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.

  • Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation.
  • Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require completion of grant application forms and may involve budget development and analysis.
  • Clinical Practice within Hospital Medicine

    Represent the Department of Hospital Medicine in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to Onco-Hospitalist Medicine. Will require traveling to sites outside the Houston area and, upon return, sharing information with department colleagues verbally or in writing. Practice clinical medicine in standards set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians, balanced with academic activities.

  • Provide complete and thorough history and physical examinations. Perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.
  • Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
  • Provide physician staffing for the Department of Hospital Medicine at a level commensurate with that provided by other internists with similar training and experience.
  • Review ICD-9 and CPT coding for accuracy and approve charge documents within 5 working days.
  • Complete patient documentation for medical records within policy time frames; dictate clearly and visually review documents.
  • Correspond in writing or by telephone with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
  • Stay current through continuing education conferences and assimilate information presented.
  • Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone or in writing to other physicians.
  • Act as a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
  • Provide peer review for assessing clinical practice within the Department.

Must be able to work within a context of intense interpersonal relationships with other physicians, patients, and subordinates.

Required Qualifications

The Assistant Professor, CFA must have completed the M.D. degree in an accredited medical school or equivalent, completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent, have applied to and been accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas.
