Job Summary:

The candidate must have strong clinical and communication skills, accountability, and provide high-quality care for individuals housed in the Harris County Jail. Responsibilities include intake health assessments, managing urgent care issues, treating chronic illnesses, and collaborating with advanced practice practitioners. Work in conjunction with Harris County Sheriff Office deputies, nursing staff, and on-site services (radiology, pharmacy, nutrition, dental, laboratory).
May require communication with the Harris Health Transfer Center or other local hospitals for higher levels of care. Ensure organizational compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Provide intake health assessments and manage urgent care issues for jail-inmate patients.
- Identify and treat acute and chronic medical conditions in a correctional health setting.
- Collaborate with advanced practice practitioners, nursing staff, and on-site services (radiology, pharmacy, nutrition, dental, laboratory).
- Coordinate with the Harris Health Transfer Center or external hospitals as needed for higher levels of care.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Communicate and collaborate with Harris County Sheriff Office deputies as appropriate to patient care and safety.
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) who is board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine; board certification must be obtained before board eligibility expires; must meet credentialing criteria set by the Medical Executive Committee.
- Texas Medical Board license to practice medicine and active physician registration in Texas.
- Active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license for the duration of employment.
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited 3-year or 4-year residency program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to engage with patients and colleagues in a high-contact environment.
- Proficiency in computer applications and clinical skills (e.g., suturing, splinting, EKG interpretation).
- Knowledge of medical terminology, analytical skills, and ability to perform relevant clinical duties.
- Flexible schedule with 12-hour night shifts.

Other requirements and notes include general scheduling considerations and the need to submit leave requests in advance to arrange coverage. CME requirements include five business days per year; notice of leave should be provided sixty (60) days in advance.
