Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Pediatric Acute Care Cardiologist – Children’s Heart Institute

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-tenure clinical track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor position in the Children's Heart Institute, Division of Pediatric Cardiology. The Pediatric Cardiology Team is internationally recognized for providing patients with the best standard of pediatric cardiac care for children and adults with congenital heart defects. It includes 22 cardiologists, 4 congenital heart surgeons, and a dedicated cardiac ICU and NICU.

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is ranked in the top 25 pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery programs in the 2024‑2025 US News & World Report.

The Children’s Heart Institute (CHI) is seeking a pediatric cardiologist with expertise or subspecialty training in acute care/inpatient cardiology to join our rapidly expanding team. Fourth‑year acute care cardiology fellows as well as candidates with expertise in inpatient cardiology, quality improvement and/or patient safety are particularly encouraged to apply. The applicant will spend time on the cardiology inpatient service covering the Children’s Heart Institute IMU (acute care unit), Cardiac ICU, cardiology consults and cardiac patients in NICU.

Duties include patient care, teaching of fellows/residents/medical students/APPs, and participation in research and other scholarly activities. The acute care cardiology team is multidisciplinary, consisting of cardiologists, fellows, residents, APPs, nursing, dietitians, pharmacists, case managers, speech therapists, and others.

The selected candidate will contribute to the department’s mission to educate health science professionals, discover and translate advances in the biomedical and social sciences, and model best practices in clinical care and public health through research, teaching, clinical service, administrative activities, and other services.

Position Key Accountabilities
  • Provide direct patient care and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical and hospital settings.
  • Develop and sustain an environment in the patient care units that supports excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients, processes, protocols, and standards that support positive patient care outcomes, including excellent risk‑adjusted outcomes.
  • Participate in ongoing departmental quality improvement planning and processes consistent with the organizational Quality Management Plan.
  • Identify patient and family needs of the populations served; recommend and/or develop new programs and services to meet those needs; ensure age‑specific equipment, supplies, and educational resources are available for assigned units/services.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to clinical managers, attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, clinical staff, and fellows.
  • Delegate authority and accountability to clinical and nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem‑solving ability, and interpersonal skills.
  • Participate in and/or chair committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in‑services, current literature, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in your field of expertise; support and promote education and research.
Qualifications
  • Texas Medical License or eligibility for a Texas Faculty Temporary License.
  • Board Certified in Pediatrics and Board Certified and/or eligible candidates in Pediatric Cardiology.
