Position: Executive Reporter 10PM

The Executive Reporter serves as the content leader for a new 10PM accountability newscast, overseeing investigative reporting, story development, and editorial quality. This role supports the launch and growth of a new 10 p.m. accountability news program focused on investigative reporting, community issues, and public/government systems.

The position requires deep investigative journalism experience and the ability to build and lead a team focused on accountability, explanatory, and solutions journalism that serves Houston Strivers.

Responsibilities Investigative & Content Leadership
  • Lead editorial decisions on story selection, investigative priorities, and storytelling approaches for the 10PM newscast
  • Create systems and workflows to manage a team of reporters and photographers to hit deadlines and maintain high standards
  • Develop and oversee investigative projects that expose systemic failures, demand accountability, and elevate solutions
  • Manage the investigative reporting team, ensuring stories meet journalistic standards and differentiate from traditional news approaches
  • Coach reporters on investigative techniques, source development, and accountability journalism
  • Identify enterprise opportunities that set this program apart from competitors
Story Development & Quality Control
  • Work closely with Executive Producer and Manager of Content and Coverage (MCC) on show development, content, and digital strategies
  • Review and improve scripts, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with the program's accountability mission
  • Guide reporters on transforming complex issues into accessible, impact‑focused stories
  • Develop investigative segments including accountability stories, follow‑up reporting on results, explainers, and public spending investigations
  • Ensure all content answers: "Why should viewers care?" and "What's the accountability angle?"
  • Maintain balance between investigation and solutions in show content
Team Development & Collaboration
  • Coach investigative reporters on enterprise development, sourcing, and storytelling excellence
  • Foster collaboration between reporters and the production team
  • Partner with Executive Producer to ensure content and presentation work seamlessly
  • Work with MCC on long‑term content strategy and team development
  • Maintain regular 1‑on‑1s with direct reports focused on professional growth
  • Support the development of new program elements and audience engagement strategies
Experience Key Qualifications
  • Minimum 7‑10 years of television journalism experience
  • Minimum 5 years of investigative or special projects reporting experience
  • Proven track record of breaking investigative stories with measurable impact
  • Experience with digital storytelling, accountability journalism, public records requests, and data journalism
  • Previous leadership or mentoring experience preferred
  • Experience launching new programming or content initiatives a plus
Skills
  • Expert‑level understanding of journalistic ethics, sourcing standards, and legal considerations
  • Strong editorial judgment and decision‑making under deadline pressure
  • Ability to identify systemic issues and develop investigative story angles
  • Excellent coaching and feedback skills
  • Multi‑platform storytelling expertise (broadcast, digital, streaming, social)
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Collaborative mindset with clear communication skills
Knowledge
  • Deep understanding of Houston communities, systems, and power structures
  • Familiarity with FOIA/public records processes
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical considerations in investigative journalism
  • Understanding of solutions journalism principles
