About the Comptroller’s Office

The Comptroller’s Office serves Texas’ citizens as the chief tax collector, accountant, revenue estimator, treasurer and purchasing manager. The agency writes checks and keeps books for the multi‑billion‑dollar state business.

About the Division

The Audit Division employs Tax Auditors nationwide. Tax Compliance is the primary focus. The division works to increase tax reporting accuracy and promote voluntary compliance.

Position Summary

Tax Auditor – entry level positions (I, II, III). In‑office work is required for the first six months while completing Basic Audit Training. Teleworking is permitted after this period. All auditors attend yearly audit training approved by the Texas CPA Association.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare for audit engagements on entry‑level tax audits.
  • Establish audit period; review current audit file and prior findings, pertinent law, rules and legal aspects.
  • Follow established procedures to conduct audits on entry‑level tax audits.
  • Conduct entrance conference to identify availability of records and review taxpayer’s accounting system.
  • Determine scope of audit, develop audit plan (including testing of internal controls and reconciliations), inspect and analyze books, document exceptions, and keep taxpayer informed.
  • Implement deviations from audit plans when necessary and document them to perform audits more efficiently.
  • Conduct exit conference to discuss findings and explain taxpayer rights.
  • Prepare and present audit reports that conform to agency policy.
  • Verify accuracy of data entries and reports, prepare audit schedules with tax projections, and assemble audit package.
  • Meet training requirements and prioritize, plan, and organize assignments to optimize efficiency.
  • Plan available time to complete assigned tasks, set and meet deadlines, produce high‑quality work.
  • Adjust work behavior based on constructive feedback and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Support assignments through redetermination process and hearings, including testifying as needed.
  • Perform administrative tasks per office and division policy and other duties as assigned.
Licenses / Certifications

Salary
  • Tax Auditor I – $5,416.67
  • Tax Auditor II – $5,958.33
  • Tax Auditor III – $6,562.50
Minimum Qualifications
  • Tax Auditor I:
    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting; or a finance bachelor’s or master’s degree with at least 12 hours in accounting; or any other field with a total of 24 semester hours of accounting.
  • Tax Auditor II:
    One (1) year as a Tax Auditor II with the Comptroller of Public Accounts and left the agency in good standing within the past three years.
  • Tax Auditor III:
    One (1) year as a Tax Auditor III with Comptroller of Public Accounts and left the agency in good standing within the past three years.
Important Notes to the Candidate
  • Salary is contingent upon qualifications. CPA employees in the same classification will be transferred laterally with no salary increase.
