Job Details

Our staffing agency is seeking an experienced Controller on behalf of our client in Hot Springs, AR. The Controller will lead and direct all financial operations of the organization in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles and established financial management practices within the insurance industry. This position plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and regulatory compliance of all accounting and financial reporting functions.

The Controller oversees general accounting, investment journal accounting, premium and commission accounting, actuarial computations, tax reporting, annual statement preparation, and regulatory filings. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining financial systems, policies, and procedures that align with statutory requirements and professional accounting standards. The Controller also provides oversight to the Finance Department staff, ensuring strong internal controls, audit trails, and efficient financial operations.

As a member of senior management, the Controller collaborates with executive leadership, actuaries, regulators, auditors, and board members to support strategic decision-making and maintain financial stability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and oversee all fiscal activities, including complex financial transactions and reporting functions.
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate Finance Department managers and staff; conduct performance assessments and provide leadership guidance.
  • Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, general ledgers, subsidiary ledgers, and financial statements.
  • Prepare statutory financial statements in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manage quarterly and annual filings, including year-end reporting.
  • Oversee preparation and submission of tax forms, tax payments, and related financial reports.
  • Coordinate with state insurance regulators regarding filings, examinations, and compliance matters.
  • Collaborate with actuaries concerning life reserves and actuarial analyses.
  • Monitor bank accounts, review and reconcile bank statements, and manage cash flow analysis.
  • Coordinate and respond to outside auditors during periodic audits.
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations for the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain and update the Fiscal Operations Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Ensure maintenance of audit trails and adherence to internal controls.
  • Stay current on changes to Statutory Accounting Principles, IRS regulations, and economic trends.
  • Perform additional projects and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in finance or a related field.
  • Strong experience with Statutory Accounting Principles required.
  • Actuarial and financial management experience required.
  • Knowledge of insurance accounting practices; experience with FIS Insurance Accounting Suite (IAS) is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of IRS rules and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with experience supervising and developing staff.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make timely, complex decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, accounting software, and 10-key calculator.
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record and must be bondable.
  • Professional demeanor and dependable attendance required.
