ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN (PAYROLL/BENEFITS SPECIALIST)
Purpose Statement
Member of the Finance team that will ensure accurate processing and recording of the organization’s payroll, provide timely and accurate financial information, participate in daily data entry payroll processing. Coordinate benefits for eligible employees of the organization including open enrollment and FMLA processes.
This job reports to Business Manager
Essential Functions- Prepare and submit payroll monthly for approximately 170 employees.
- Collect banking information for direct deposit setup and initiate deposits on payday.
- Perform daily payroll/benefits department operations.
- Manage workflow to ensure all payroll/benefits transactions are processed accurately and timely.
- Reconcile payroll prior to transmission and validate confirmed reports.
- Understand proper taxation of employer paid benefits.
- Process correct garnishment calculations and compliance.
- Assists auditors for the purpose of providing requested supporting documentation required for audit.
- Perform compliances for unclaimed property payroll checks.
- Process accurate and timely year-end reporting when necessary (W-2, W-2c, etc.).
- Compiles financial information related to work assignments for the purpose of providing required documentation and/or processing information.
- Informs other staff and/or outside parties regarding procedural requirements for the purpose of processing transactions.
- Monitors account balances and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate and complying with established financial practices.
- Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Reconciles financial data for the purpose of maintaining accurate account balances and ensuring compliance with established accounting practices.
- Responds to inquiries of staff and administration regarding payroll and benefits for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
- Coordinate the organization’s benefits programs (e.g., retirement plans, leave policies, wellness programs, insurance policies, etc.).
- Stay up-to-date with benefits plans, programs, and policies.
- Make recommendations based on data analysis.
- Monitor government regulations, legislation, and benefits trends.
- Work with the organization’s third party administrator (TPA).
- Manage the enrollment, renewal, and distribution processes.
- Coordinate FMLA for employees who become eligible.
- Correspond with healthcare providers and employees to ensure proper FMLA procedures and benefits.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
- CPP preferred but not required.
- Experience processing payroll of similar size.
- Working knowledge of payroll and benefits best practices.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations.
- Strong PC skills including proficiency in Excel.
- Strong work ethic and team player.
- High degree of professionalism.
- Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
- Strong interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills.
- Ability to communicate with various levels of management.
- Decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 90% sitting, 10% walking, and % standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
